Oh Oh. Morgan Ctr: E Scott "not guaranteed to return to the team"

I know you all are still recovering from learning about the latest example of stupidity in Dorrell's program, but we have big news on yet another troubled Dorrell front.

Lets just say the Eric Scott saga got lot more interesting.

Chris Foster from the LA Times (who has made a great debut and already giving Dohn a run for his money as the best Bruin beat reporter in town) has just published a very interesting report (emphasis mine):

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department expects to forward its case against UCLA football assistant Eric Scott and two others to the district attorney's office this week, Det. Ulysses Cruz said Monday.

Scott, who is on paid leave, was arrested with two others on July 24 on suspicion of burglary in the break-in of a Norwalk home. The case moved forward in recent days, Cruz said, after investigators finally were able to locate residents of the house.

Milton Grimes, Scott's attorney, did not return telephone calls Monday, but UCLA Coach Karl Dorrell said, "I talked with Eric this morning and he said that there has been progress."

Another UCLA official added, "Every indication we get from Eric and his attorney is this will all be resolved."

Even if the case against Scott is dropped, the receivers coach -- a UCLA graduate and former Bruins player -- is not guaranteed to return to the team. An athletic department official said that the circumstances surrounding the incident would have to be examined.

That is a great signal from Morgan Center. That is exactly what I wanted to here. Scott should not be allowed back on campus until we have clear explanation on what exactly happened during his hiring process and we can find out what did Dorrell know and when did know about his assistant's tainted criminal record of 4 arrests and 2 convictions.

Foster then nails down the central point of this story:

Dorrell has indicated he knew something about Scott's troubled past, but Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said he was unaware of the arrests because a background check when Scott was hired in April came back clean.

The background check was done by the UCLA police department, which sent fingerprints to the California Department of Justice. While there is a variety of search levels depending on what job is involved, Department of Justice spokesman Gareth Lacy said "it is very unlikely" Scott's previous record would have been missed.

Mr. "Make A Move" will have some 'splaining to do. And until he gives us a clear answer UCLA should not allow its assistant with 5 arrests and 2 convictions back on campus. Again it is encouraging to see the Morgan Center sending some stern signals to Dorrell, Scott and rest of their delusional supporters.

Let's work backward on this

It is unlikely Dept. of Justice missed Scott's arrest records. So, arrest records were sent to UCLA police. UCLA police passed arrest records to the person in charge of Scott's hiring -- KD.

KD passed the records to Guerrero -- NOT!!!!

KD hid this information from Guerrero.

KD should be making a move in his pants now, because the question now is: Why didn't KD tell Guerrero?

Let's see what scapegoat KD comes up with for this one.

not exactly, its Justice-PD-HR-AD-KD

in that order. So, Justice got it right, thats the obvious implication of the quote. And you know that UCLA PD doesn't have any skin in the game, so they did their job passing it onto HR. That's where the athletic department (AD) chimes in and says there was a breakdown in the process ... leaving open the possibility that it could have been the PD or HR or the AD's OWN internal HR department that would have received the background check from HR. It smacks of cover-up. Why would anyone at HR have anything to hide?? What do they know about one Eric Scott, who is he to them?? Nothing. The AD knew and they are purposefully being cryptic to appease reporters and say nothing at the same time.

After all, if there truly was a breakdown dont you think the AD would order an immediate background check of ALL coaches and staff to ensure there is not felony ex-cons representing UCLA?? No need to answer that.

I like this Foster already

he went a little further in asking obvious questions. Although, to be fair to Dohn, he did say he asked to see the background check the PD performed and was denied due to confidentiality.

Its all about taking that extra step

I really like how Chris followed up by contacting DOJ and getting the perspective of a DOJ official. I like that he didn't just stick with the statement of Scott's attorney. Its refreshing. I hope keeps this up.

Did someone fib just a bit?

It would be nice to get a straight answer, but it doesn't seem like anyone has been able to even ask the question. We're all speculating as to what was and wasn't learned during the background check process.

But if Mr. Dorrell knew about Coach Scott's past and didn't tell Mr. Guerrero, isn't that somewhat close to that which got Coach Harrick fired?

That seems to me to be a precedent. If your boss expects the whole story and you leave out a teensy little detail like FOUR ARRESTS AND TWO CONVICTIONS, then as has been stated by others, you got some splainin' to do.

Its actually now 3 convictions

the article cites 3 misdemeanor convictions .. 2 for concealed weapons, 1 for disturbing the peace.

This is turning really bad

The deafening silence coming from Morgan Center very eloquent. We have learned exactly one thing - that Coach Scott might not be back. That's sure taking a stand!

How about addressing the issues involved in the hiring of Coach Scott? Who knew what? And does anyone in Morgan Center really care? Is this a situation where as long as Coach Scott can deliver players from the inner city, then we don't care about the baggage that he brought with him?

I am about to deliver the worst insult I can imagine, so fellow Bruins, you might not want to let the kids keep reading. The Athletic Department at UCLA is now starting to look a lot like the Athletic Department at justsc. There. I said it. But what's the difference so far? No one is telling the truth. Apparently no one cares.

The Process

As long as we are guessing, I subscribe to the theory that all UCLA connected parties were supporting KD and the football program and the hiring of this wonderful recruiter, who had some queasy moments coming out of south-central. I wouldn't be surprised if the UCLA PD saw the actual record, filered out the "insignificant parts" and passed it on. After all the PD can make determinations of what the arrest/conviction record of someone with a "troubled past who is trying, with support from the HC, to have a career" is deemed by them to be important and what is not important. There may very well be something fishy with the jock sniffers at the UCLA PD.

It would be nice not to have to speculate

about all this. Aren't we supposed to be a little more transparent than justsc? Isn't there supposed to be some integrity associated with UCLA football? It seems to me that Morgan Center is treating this whole affair like justsc treated "White Nation."

Come on, Morgan Center. Tell the story.

What and
When

It seems like lies, deceptions, dishonesty, misinformation, concealment, omissions, and who knows what more, are at play here. The center stage is no longer Scott, but the Morgan Center.

At stake is integrity of UCLA coaches and UCLA's reputation. This is much more important than W/L.

If a coach cannot meet the standards, be that coach be Scott or KD, then UCLA has to do what is right regardless of potential damage to the program.
