The Right Notes
Let's get to the news and notes from the big Monday. As bruinhoo outlined below DG hit all the right notes in yesterday's press conference. Wanted to pick out three bits from the LAT report on firing. First, DG said he was going to take as much time as it takes to make sure we hire the "right coach":
And as to one of the main reason why DG let Dorrell go:
Meanwhile, Chris Dufresne in the LA Times hit all the right notes in his observations that Dorrell absolutely received a fair shake at UCLA:
UCLA gave a young coach a five-year chance and it didn't work out.
Dorrell got sufficient time to breathe, grow and prosper. He was a Bruin, a former star receiver, part of the family. Dorrell was hired by Dan Guerrero, a minority athletic director.
Dorrell was not fired because he is black. He was fired for the same reason a lot of coaches are fired. He didn't win enough, 35-27 in five seasons, and didn't beat USC enough -- one time in five tries.
"The issue in this particular situation has nothing to do with race," Guerrero said Monday. "It is really about performance and about my expectations of this program as we move forward."
UCLA just took a chance on a minority coach with no previous head-coaching experience. Guerrero, understandably, might not want to go that route again.
Moving on over at the recruiting front there has been no mass decommittments. In fact the LA Times is reporting that some kids reasonably are now on a holding pattern, while others are going a step forward and remaining committed to UCLA:
It was a text message from his father telling him that Karl Dorrell had been fired as UCLA's football coach.
Larimore told Dorrell and his staff that he planned on accepting UCLA's scholarship offer and would sign a national letter of intent in February.
The news didn't change any of those plans.
"It's unfortunate they're going to leave, but I'm going to honor [my commitment]," he said. "I hope the defensive coaches don't leave, but I guess it just happens. I imagine we might lose some people, but I looked at everything. The education is huge."
"He's one of the reasons I came here," Price said of Dorrell. "If they get rid of the defensive staff, yeah, I'll probably leave. I'm not sure yet, though. I'm still weighing my options."
Last week, linebacker Reggie Carter said the gains UCLA had made in recruiting L.A. high schools would take a hit if there was a total turnover on the coaching staff, particularly with top recruiters in defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker and receivers coach Eric Scott.
"Those are the two people I definitely wouldn't want to leave. I think that would really break things up," Carter said. "I know we're trying to build, but I don't want to start over. That would destroy the team and we would have to start all over again."
All in all, I think Monday went really well. Once again I will say how encouraging it was to hear DG strike all the right notes. It's pretty clear to me that he is in line with the thoughts and vision we have been laying out here on BN for almost three years.
Now as grok451 pointed out below as we go through a coaching search (which could be a long one), we have to be patient. I know we all have our own favorite candidates. However, there is no absolute in this business. Every coach has their own flaws, while each of them is unique in their own way. I am just encouraged by the names that we are hearing publicly, which I believe is a huge improvement from the names we heard last go around, and to me I am sensing a breaking away from the era of Terry Donahue, which is a huge relief in my book. So let's all buckle up a little and enjoy the search.
I really liked how Quickhands stepped up and shared the article he found on Mike Leach (and BTW our friends at Double-T Nation are worried to say the least). If you like a particular coach and are doing research on him, feel free to share with rest of us, and articulate why you think he would be a good fit for Westwood. This is a great time for all of us to enlighten each other about new coaches, personalities, philosophies/approaches to the game etc.
It's a great time to be a UCLA football fan. There is a sense of hope as everyone is hitting our notes. The right notes.
GO BRUINS.

Whicker wa-a-a-a-a-y off base
"..It would be another new system, or two, for a team that longs for continuity.."
Continuity of what? Losing? Failure?
He also suggests Bellichick and Cable as prospects.
Mark is a nice guy (and responsive to e-mails), but he ought to do a little more research. Maybe hang out on BN for a while.

Dufrense Picks Up the Race Card
Perhaps, the biggest loser in all of this is Streeter whose credibility was shredded by one column. Yes, he got attention, and yes there are people who say "there is no such thing as bad publicity" but for a journalist, credibility is critical. And, Streeter is no longer credible -- especially after being called out by his fellow Fishwrap writer.

Dohn Got Killed by His Blog
But, he totally misjudged how a blog can even the playing field amongst "commentators" -- be they professional writers or knowledgeable fans.
It's one thing to have a stupid column criticized in a letter to the editor -- and another to be directly engaged by the public.
The letter could be ignored. The direct engagement couldn't.
On the blog, he got badly beat up and exposed as a hack by many of us who were able to challenge the quality of his reporting, his "sources" and his integrity.
His responses made the beating worse. He was condescending and shallow.
The blogsphere is not a place for those who lack talent and/or integrity. There are too many people out here with the skill and knowledge to do his job -- people who use their skills elsewhere but, when necessary, can turn to dismantle a hack writer.

Petersen's remarks classless
Didn't even have the courtesy to say UCLA, but instead "that place," as if we were a leper colony.
I don't know about the rest of you, but his remark offends me as a Bruin.
Let him wallow in potatos for years to come, I don't want him at UCLA.

Here's the link, but it's not cued up to the quote. It's probably about 60% of the way through it and not exactly easy to find. He's enjoyable to listen to, however.

James Washington
After I recovered from that BS, I wanted to reach through the radio and slap some sense into JW. More time? Academic requirements? Bob (I was coach here 5 yrs ago and still being blamed for all of KD's crap) Toledo? Facilities?
Let's stand & deliver on this fact...KD had the opportunity, he knew everything about UCLA, he took their money & he didn't get the job done. Now take a step back, KD, rebuild your skills and try again. If he is truly the man of integrity that everyone says he is, then he will be back somewhere.
In the meantime, let's find a coach who can restore the glory of UCLA football & take us to bigger & better places in the future.
BTW, hell no to KD coaching the LV Bowl!!!

Dufresne ...
He makes it a point to note that Walker seems to do well against USC. SC has scored 31 off us in two games (not counting the safety in '06).
Some of those points came off turnovers and had we not taken that penalty and held SC to a field goal on Saturday it would have only been 27 in two games.
Walker is not my choice for head coach. But I would have no problem with him staying on as defensive coordinator and due to his positive influence on recruiting, I sort of hope he does get hired by the next coach if the next coach wants to hire him.
by Achilles on Dec 4, 2007 9:58 AM PST 0 recs
Whicker
Most of all, Walker represents the best of the Karl Dorrell years and his hiring would be an acknowledgement that they weren't all bad.
What the hell? This is not about sending soft and fluffy messages to the old coach and his boosters! What type of moron makes a point like this? It's about putting a winning team on the field and fine men in society.

Losing Recruits?

Mariucci 6-6 with Cal in 1996 (lost Aloha bowl)
I'm also worried about our recruits, but what can you do. I'd like to see us woo away Ken Norton (defensive coordinator?) to set that record straight.
I'm also worried that Steve Mariucci may be seriously considered for the job. His track record is spotty and my Cal friend (who describes him as a rah, rah sideline poser) has wished him upon us, which is not a good thing.
by ocbruin1985 on Dec 4, 2007 11:49 AM PST 0 recs
Cals record
1995 3-8
1996 6-6*****
1997 3-8
1998 5-6
1999 0-11
Does ONE YEAR in the 90's stick out? The ONLY non losing season was under Mariucci in his only season there. His predacessors and his successors couldn't do it. No time for recruiting just PURE coaching
I'll take Mooch any day.

Do we need a Mooch?
Seriously, SM's bounced around so much. Wouldn't we be better off with a stable Howland-esque, Wooden-esque figure? Someone with a proven-track record of building programs.
Also, SM's penchant for the dreaded West Coast Offense should be enough to disqualify him.

I have no problem with Peterson or Leach
And I don't think ANYONE will revive the WCO again at UCLA.
by dadofgrad06 on Dec 4, 2007 1:24 PM PST 0 recs
I could be wrong...
I would like someone who is committed, not only to molding young minds and teaching young players, but also to making UCLA, in particular, that national contender that Guerrero spoke of. I'd like a coach burning with desire to make UCLA a consistent player in the "national discussion," not one looking to burnish his resumé.
p.s. I'm a dadofgrad04 (and a grad from, ahem, an earlier time).

Petersen at UCLA now for interview?
I apoligize for the vagueness and wasnt exact with my times because I wasnt aware fanatics would know flight schedules down to the second. It was the Alaska/Horizon flight that left Boise at 6:05am and Arrived at LAX at 7:30am. I take this same flight weekly to LA for my business there. I would not lie about something so ridiculous. Chris Peterson was 100% on that flight this morning to LA. you can deny it all you want but the reality is no matter how stupid anyone thinks californians are or how stupid the job would be he is in LA as we speak.. you will see, because that news will come out to the public. I am a true BSU fan born and raised in Boise but that doesnt mean Im gonna deny him being on that plane because he was.
by cmcbruin on Dec 4, 2007 1:45 PM PST 0 recs
Wouldn't be surprised..
Still, if he is coming to L.A. to talk to Guerrero, he may just be paying a professional courtesy to interview.

Petersen in LA to Recruit
----
Petersen was at Los Angeles University High on a recruiting stop, pausing from those duties just long enough to repeat that he is not interested in the job that became open when UCLA fired Karl Dorrell on Monday.
Wearing sunglasses (but no fake nose) and dressed in brown pants and a blue long-sleeved shirt with a Boise State logo, Petersen issued his latest denial in a relaxed, congenial manner, saying he had not made contact with UCLA or vice versa.
"If I'm at your press conference four days from now, throw tomatoes at me," he added. "I'm not a candidate. It's not a good fit for me."

As for Mooch, he might have had a shoddy record but honestly he has had some pretty tough jobs: the crap that is called Detroit, an SF that has been worse than when he was there, and Kyle Boller.

All kidding aside,
And is it true that you guys only had 12 three-and-out's the entire year? How in the world can you expect to develop All-American punters? To put that in perspective, we had 30 punts in our last three games, and were 0 for 11 on third down against justsc.
That sort of bone-chilling mediocrity of the old regime is why we're trying to hijack your Pirate King.

What I look for in the new ucla football coach
must consistently bring down the whammy. Dorrell was a nice guy, but after a UCLA loss, I would often ask myself "where was the whammy and why wasn't it brought down?" I think Dan needs to look at the "whammy-factor" when evaluating coaching candidates.
