The Right Notes

Let's get to the news and notes from the big Monday. As bruinhoo outlined below DG hit all the right notes in yesterday's press conference.  Wanted to pick out three bits from the LAT report on firing. First, DG said he was going to take as much time as it takes to make sure we hire the "right coach":

Guerrero expects a lengthy process before hiring the Bruins' next football coach because "we need to hire the right coach, and it's better to take some time and get it right then to rush and not make the right decisions."
Also I was encouraged to not hear the name - Bob Field - anywhere in this sentence:
Guerrero said an executive search firm will be hired to help "assist with the background checks and help evaluate the talent pool," but he said athletic department officials and Chancellor Gene Block would be involved "every step of the way."
From what I hear the athletic department officials DG will be paying close attention will probably not include Bob Fields, who came up with the finalist list of Riley, Robinson, and Dorrell last time around.

And as to one of the main reason why DG let Dorrell go:
"We have to build a program that can be competitive, especially in this city, as you well know," Guerrero said, referring to USC. "At times we did, but at other times we didn't. . . . At some point you have to say, 'Are you ready to take that next step?' I felt at this point in time we weren't ready to do this and I felt I had to get a new coach."
In other words just winning 60 percent of football games will not be enough at UCLA. The next step here means winning Pac-10 championships and being one of the main contenders in the BCS discussions in early December not in late August.

Meanwhile, Chris Dufresne in the LA Times hit all the right notes in his observations that Dorrell absolutely received a fair shake at UCLA:
Black, white, green or red, it's tough to argue Dorrell didn't get a fair shake.

UCLA gave a young coach a five-year chance and it didn't work out.

Dorrell got sufficient time to breathe, grow and prosper. He was a Bruin, a former star receiver, part of the family. Dorrell was hired by Dan Guerrero, a minority athletic director.

Dorrell was not fired because he is black. He was fired for the same reason a lot of coaches are fired. He didn't win enough, 35-27 in five seasons, and didn't beat USC enough -- one time in five tries.

"The issue in this particular situation has nothing to do with race," Guerrero said Monday. "It is really about performance and about my expectations of this program as we move forward."
Chris also connected when he wrote that why it is more than reasonable for DG to go another route than hiring an unproven assistant coach like DeWayne Walker with zero years of head coaching experience:
However, Walker's chances of getting the top spot at UCLA may be undermined by circumstances.

UCLA just took a chance on a minority coach with no previous head-coaching experience. Guerrero, understandably, might not want to go that route again.
Unfortunately Dufresne's common sense is missing from Mark Whicker's UCLA "wish list," which has the DyNoMite at the top. Then again Mark was defending Dorrell till the very last day. So his words don't count for much. He has no credibility when it comes to matter of UCLA football.

Moving on over at the recruiting front there has been no mass decommittments. In fact the LA Times is reporting that some kids reasonably are now on a holding pattern, while others are going a step forward and remaining committed to UCLA:
Newhall Hart High linebacker Patrick Larimore was at a news conference today for the teams playing in this weekend's Southern Section football championships when his cell phone buzzed.

It was a text message from his father telling him that Karl Dorrell had been fired as UCLA's football coach.

Larimore told Dorrell and his staff that he planned on accepting UCLA's scholarship offer and would sign a national letter of intent in February.

The news didn't change any of those plans.

"It's unfortunate they're going to leave, but I'm going to honor [my commitment]," he said. "I hope the defensive coaches don't leave, but I guess it just happens. I imagine we might lose some people, but I looked at everything. The education is huge."
Larimore sounds like a veteran Bruin. As for concerns about defensive coaches leaving, Kuwada also had these notes from two current players:
After learning of the firing, defensive tackle Brian Price, the top prize in the Bruins' 2007 recruiting class and a second-team freshman All-American, said he might transfer.

"He's one of the reasons I came here," Price said of Dorrell. "If they get rid of the defensive staff, yeah, I'll probably leave. I'm not sure yet, though. I'm still weighing my options."

Last week, linebacker Reggie Carter said the gains UCLA had made in recruiting L.A. high schools would take a hit if there was a total turnover on the coaching staff, particularly with top recruiters in defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker and receivers coach Eric Scott.

"Those are the two people I definitely wouldn't want to leave. I think that would really break things up," Carter said. "I know we're trying to build, but I don't want to start over. That would destroy the team and we would have to start all over again."
I appreciate the concerns of Price and Carter. But we have to remember they are still kids. And some of these reactions are expected. If DG executes a good search process (which I think he will) and gets us the right coach, not only the recruits will remain in fold, I believe the concerns of our current players will be addressed, and everyone will look forward to a new beginning starting.

All in all, I think Monday went really well. Once again I will say how encouraging it was to hear DG strike all the right notes. It's pretty clear to me that he is in line with the thoughts and vision we have been laying out here on BN for almost three years.
Now as grok451 pointed out below as we go through a coaching search (which could be a long one), we have to be patient. I know we all have our own favorite candidates. However, there is no absolute in this business. Every coach has their own flaws, while each of them is unique in their own way. I am just encouraged by the names that we are hearing publicly, which I believe is a huge improvement from the names we heard last go around, and to me I am sensing a breaking away from the era of Terry Donahue, which is a huge relief in my book. So let's all buckle up a little and enjoy the search.

I really liked how Quickhands stepped up and shared the article he found on Mike Leach (and BTW our friends at Double-T Nation are worried to say the least). If you like a particular coach and are doing research on him, feel free to share with rest of us, and articulate why you think he would be a good fit for Westwood. This is a great time for all of us to enlighten each other about new coaches, personalities, philosophies/approaches to the game etc.

It's a great time to be a UCLA football fan. There is a sense of hope as everyone is hitting our notes. The right notes.

GO BRUINS.

Whicker wa-a-a-a-a-y off base
His column bears perusal if for no othe reason than to be a lesson as to how wrong and superficial these beat schlumpfs can be. I mean, where was this guy all during the whole controversy this season? I know, I know, backing Dorrell. But saying that Petersen would be wrong for UCLA because:

"..It would be another new system, or two, for a team that longs for continuity.."

Continuity of what? Losing? Failure?

He also suggests Bellichick and Cable as prospects.

Mark is a nice guy (and responsive to e-mails), but he ought to do a little more research. Maybe hang out on BN for a while.

Dufrense Picks Up the Race Card
Implicitly criticizing his fellow columnist, Dufrense makes clear tht race was not an issue.

Perhaps, the biggest loser in all of this is Streeter whose credibility was shredded by one column. Yes, he got attention, and yes there are people who say "there is no such thing as bad publicity" but for a journalist, credibility is critical. And, Streeter is no longer credible -- especially after being called out by his fellow Fishwrap writer.

Brian Dohn is another one
His credibility (in his football reporting) is gone.

Dohn Got Killed by His Blog
His articles were bad enough.

But, he totally misjudged how a blog can even the playing field amongst "commentators" -- be they professional writers or knowledgeable fans.

It's one thing to have a stupid column criticized in a letter to the editor -- and another to be directly engaged by the public.

The letter could be ignored. The direct engagement couldn't.

On the blog, he got badly beat up and exposed as a hack by many of us who were able to challenge the quality of his reporting, his "sources" and his integrity.

His responses made the beating worse. He was condescending and shallow.

The blogsphere is not a place for those who lack talent and/or integrity. There are too many people out here with the skill and knowledge to do his job -- people who use their skills elsewhere but, when necessary, can turn to dismantle a hack writer.

Petersen's remarks classless
"I am not interested in that place."

Didn't even have the courtesy to say UCLA, but instead "that place," as if we were a leper colony.

I don't know about the rest of you, but his remark offends me as a Bruin.

Let him wallow in potatos for years to come, I don't want him at UCLA.

by bluegold on Dec 4, 2007 8:14 AM PST   0 recs

I did find
his remarks curious, to say the least.  I would like to think he was misquoted or perhaps he was just referring to Los Angeles.  I'm trying to spin his comment to make it seem less offensive, I guess.

Me too, but...
...that was after reading the quote; hearing the audio he did not seem nearly so dismissive.

I agree
The audio (and video) are less harsh than the written quote.

Here's the link, but it's not cued up to the quote.  It's probably about 60% of the way through it and not exactly easy to find.  He's enjoyable to listen to, however.

FWIW
on the Joe Grande show last night (not that those guys make much sense at all on ucla football), James Washington mentioned the Brian Price situation during a phone interview, and it sounded like he's just frustrated, hopes DW stays, but isn't going anywhere. like N said, these are kids, especially Price, and after the 2nd half of the season he had, he's in great shape to start next year and to make a name for himself under a competent staff. i doubt he's going anywhere.

James Washington
Recall also that Washington felt that KD wasn't allowed to bring in the best athletes due to UCLA's academic requirements, which in part led to his not being able to put the best team on the field.  JW also felt that KD needed more time to complete the building of the program, recover from Bob Toledo, build facilities, etc.

After I recovered from that BS, I wanted to reach through the radio and slap some sense into JW.  More time?  Academic requirements?  Bob (I was coach here 5 yrs ago and still being blamed for all of KD's crap) Toledo? Facilities?

Let's stand & deliver on this fact...KD had the opportunity, he knew everything about UCLA, he took their money & he didn't get the job done.  Now take a step back, KD, rebuild your skills and try again.  If he is truly the man of integrity that everyone says he is, then he will be back somewhere.

In the meantime, let's find a coach who can restore the glory of UCLA football & take us to  bigger & better places in the future.

BTW, hell no to KD coaching the LV Bowl!!!

In the tone of yesterday's post
Maybe it's time to start calling Coach Walker by his name and stop with the negative nicknames?

Just a suggestion.

"when you've seen how big the world is, how can you make due with this?"

by silverlakebruin on Dec 4, 2007 9:01 AM PST   0 recs

Dufresne ...
Reading Dufresne's column, he does remark that Walker might be the best man for the job.

He makes it a point to note that Walker seems to do well against USC. SC has scored 31 off us in two games (not counting the safety in '06).

Some of those points came off turnovers and had we not taken that penalty and held SC to a field goal on Saturday it would have only been 27 in two games.

Walker is not my choice for head coach. But I would have no problem with him staying on as defensive coordinator and due to his positive influence on recruiting, I sort of hope he does get hired by the next coach if the next coach wants to hire him.

Go Bruins

Whicker
That article from Whicker made me throw up in my mouth within 10 seconds:

Most of all, Walker represents the best of the Karl Dorrell years and his hiring would be an acknowledgement that they weren't all bad.

What the hell? This is not about sending soft and fluffy messages to the old coach and his boosters! What type of moron makes a point like this? It's about putting a winning team on the field and fine men in society.

by njbruin on Dec 4, 2007 10:03 AM PST   0 recs

Dorrellistas out in force
In the playpen, they are frustrated and having a hard time letting go. It is sad, almost as much as hiring DW because we want to keep the KD link going as long as we can. I say out with the lot if we need to. DW can be a good DC, and I believe he has learned enough OJT that a new HC can control him so his players are more consistent. Unless there is a Rocky Long available, that side of the ball is OK. The new HC could bump his salary a bit, and figure he might stay several years if DW thought the program were going to improve.

Losing Recruits?
I have just heard that committed LB Derrick Coleman from Troy High School in Fullerton got an offer from U$C just last night and will be making an official visit to their campus this weekend while his visit to UCLA is scheduled for the 15th.  Lets hope he doesn't change his mind!

Mariucci 6-6 with Cal in 1996 (lost Aloha bowl)
I bummed about Chris "Pete" Petersen's quote but I'll listen to the soundtrack.

I'm also worried about our recruits, but what can you do.  I'd like to see us woo away Ken Norton (defensive coordinator?) to set that record straight.

I'm also worried that Steve Mariucci may be seriously considered for the job.  His track record is spotty and my Cal friend (who describes him as a rah, rah sideline poser) has wished him upon us, which is not a good thing.

by ocbruin1985 on Dec 4, 2007 11:49 AM PST   0 recs

Cals record
1994  4-7
1995  3-8
1996  6-6*****
1997  3-8
1998  5-6
1999  0-11
Does ONE YEAR in the 90's stick out? The ONLY non losing season was under Mariucci in his only season there. His predacessors and his successors couldn't do it. No time for recruiting just PURE coaching

I'll take Mooch any day.

by dadofgrad06 on Dec 4, 2007 12:30 PM PST   0 recs

haha oops...
I thought that 0-11 year stood out a lot =p

by bruinbunz on Dec 4, 2007 1:33 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

1996 vs. 1998
Not much difference between 6-6 and 5-6 to me.

Short term fix
Was Cal any better off after he left for having had him as a coach?  Apparently not.  Do we want a short term fix where we maybe win 9 games next year, and then it's Adios Bruins, hello NFL, and we're right back where we started?  I don't think so.  Just say no to Mooch.

by Tommy Bruin on Dec 4, 2007 8:17 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

dorrell
won't coach "bowl" game.

by bruinthug98 on Dec 4, 2007 12:43 PM PST   0 recs

Do we need a Mooch?
Has dadofgrad06 been updating Mooch's wikipedia site?

Seriously, SM's bounced around so much.  Wouldn't we be better off with a stable Howland-esque, Wooden-esque figure?  Someone with a proven-track record of building programs.

Also, SM's penchant for the dreaded West Coast Offense should be enough to disqualify him.

by ocbruin1985 on Dec 4, 2007 1:19 PM PST   0 recs

I have no problem with Peterson or Leach
but I don't mind Mooch either. He has a better NFL record than Cheaty Petie and a whole lot better than Erickson. I liked him in SF. I just think he's taking a lot of heat here.

And I don't think ANYONE will revive the WCO again at UCLA.

by dadofgrad06 on Dec 4, 2007 1:24 PM PST   0 recs

I could be wrong...
... but I get the feeling that Mooch is looking for A job, but I don't get the feeling that UCLA is his dream job. He had a similar situation at Cal, and took off after one year.

I would like someone who is committed, not only to molding young minds and teaching young players, but also to making UCLA, in particular, that national contender that Guerrero spoke of. I'd like a coach burning with desire to make UCLA a consistent player in the "national discussion," not one looking to burnish his resumé.

p.s. I'm a dadofgrad04 (and a grad from, ahem, an earlier time).

by Bruinut on Dec 4, 2007 1:59 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Also how do you mean "bounced around"?
He had 2 NFL head coaching jobs. A stupid owner (York) fired him in SF to replace him with the totally incompetent Dennis Erickson and PLEASE tell me who can be successful in Detroit?

I wouldn't call that bouncing around- how many jobs have you had OC??

by dadofgrad06 on Dec 4, 2007 1:29 PM PST   0 recs

Petersen at UCLA now for interview?
From the Idaho Statesmen, in comments from the Peterson article, there is someone who was on the same plane from Boise to Los Angeles this morning.  Here is the post:

I apoligize for the vagueness and wasnt exact with my times because I wasnt aware fanatics would know flight schedules down to the second. It was the Alaska/Horizon flight that left Boise at 6:05am and Arrived at LAX at 7:30am. I take this same flight weekly to LA for my business there. I would not lie about something so ridiculous. Chris Peterson was 100% on that flight this morning to LA. you can deny it all you want but the reality is no matter how stupid anyone thinks californians are or how stupid the job would be he is in LA as we speak.. you will see, because that news will come out to the public. I am a true BSU fan born and raised in Boise but that doesnt mean Im gonna deny him being on that plane because he was.

by cmcbruin on Dec 4, 2007 1:45 PM PST   0 recs

Wouldn't be surprised..
Maybe I am reading more into this but he really worked at denying his interest in the job at UCLA. He also said in the interview that his kids will have three weeks off until the Hula Bowl (or something like that) and he might be visiting Dan Guerrero.

Still, if he is coming to L.A. to talk to Guerrero, he may just be paying a professional courtesy to interview.

by whp68 on Dec 4, 2007 2:36 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Hmm
I don't know. That seems kind of hard to believe when just 24 hours ago Guerrero had said they hadn't contacted anyone yet. Can things move that quickly?

by Raisin on Dec 4, 2007 2:48 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Raisin, you tell me you have a $1.5 M job
you want to talk to me about and I'll be wherever you want me to be in about 20 minutes.

Petersen in LA to Recruit
Sorry, don't know how to wrap the links: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-spw-petersen5dec05,1,5517722.story?coll=la-headlines-sports&tra ck=crosspromo

----

Petersen was at Los Angeles University High on a recruiting stop, pausing from those duties just long enough to repeat that he is not interested in the job that became open when UCLA fired Karl Dorrell on Monday.

Wearing sunglasses (but no fake nose) and dressed in brown pants and a blue long-sleeved shirt with a Boise State logo, Petersen issued his latest denial in a relaxed, congenial manner, saying he had not made contact with UCLA or vice versa.

"If I'm at your press conference four days from now, throw tomatoes at me," he added. "I'm not a candidate. It's not a good fit for me."

by Raisin on Dec 4, 2007 4:37 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I went to Uni
That's one reason I'd be ok with Petersen at UCLA. He's got a recruiting pipeline right now to Boise State, with a guy going there in each of the previous two years. I think you could say at least one has been pretty successful, with a freshman season like this.

by jaffa on Dec 4, 2007 6:36 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

its possible
He has time off after all and it is standard protocol to deny interest in another job while still HC of another school.

As for Mooch, he might have had a shoddy record but honestly he has had some pretty tough jobs: the crap that is called Detroit, an SF that has been worse than when he was there, and Kyle Boller.

by blinkshot on Dec 4, 2007 2:51 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Sorry, Red
I read the article.  I want Leach (not in the kinky way you're thinking, either, but as head coach.)  You need to find a way to keep the news of what's going on in Lubbock from getting outside the city limits.  You - excuse me - Y'all trained a pretty good coach there, and we're happy to take him off your hands.

by Fox 71 on Dec 4, 2007 2:58 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I would certainly like to keep him.
But we didn't train him.

by Red Blooded on Dec 4, 2007 3:15 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

All kidding aside,
I always enjoy watching TT play.  It's exciting on every play.  You are probably aware that when "upstart" Texas Tech plays any of the "old" schools that the entire nation is rooting for you.  Sort of like the way the entire nation roots for whomever is playing the Yankees.  It looks like you guys have a lot of fun, which is something I hope we get back no matter who our new coach is.

And is it true that you guys only had 12 three-and-out's the entire year?  How in the world can you expect to develop All-American punters?  To put that in perspective, we had 30 punts in our last three games, and were 0 for 11 on third down against justsc.

That sort of bone-chilling mediocrity of the old regime is why we're trying to hijack your Pirate King.

by Fox 71 on Dec 4, 2007 8:36 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

What I look for in the new ucla football coach
#1, above all else, the new UCLA football coach
must consistently bring down the whammy. Dorrell was a nice guy, but after a UCLA loss, I would often ask myself "where was the whammy and why wasn't it brought down?" I think Dan needs to look at the "whammy-factor" when evaluating coaching candidates.
