More Suspense

From Perelman at What's Bruin:

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block is, we are told, interviewing a potential head football coach today whose name has not come up in the last few days as one of the top candidates for the job.

Who is he? There are suspicions, but no hard facts yet.

To clarify: This is someone other than Rick Neuheisel; someone whose name has not been in the conversation.
Who could it be?

Apparently it is probably not Kragthorpe.

You have any ideas?

GO BRUINS.

Update: Per Dohn the mystery candidate is Temple coach, Al Golden:
Golden is the second known candidate to interview for a second time with Block, joining former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator and former UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel, who interviewed Tuesday.
On the surface, Golden may not seem like an inspiring hire, but he is highly thought of on the East Coast. He is 5-19 in two seasons at Temple, but the job was in disrepair when it took it over.
"He’s going places,’’ said a source close to Golden, who requested anonymity. "I think in a few years, if he’s still at Temple, he will be a guy who could be Penn State’s next coach.’’
Golden was a receiver at Penn State. He served as the defensive coordinator at Virginia from 2001-05 before taking over the Temple program. Golden and Block were also at Virginia together.
Uhm. No offense to Golden. I have no problem with an 'up and coming' coach 'going places.' I just dont't want that place to be Westwood, CA because we are just a little tired of the 'up and coming' coach 'going places' routine/BS we have had to endure for last three decades in two major sports. Then again I know these days you can't take much out of Dohn's "reports." Onward. GO BRUINS. -N

I dont know
Who it might be, but at first glance, I like it.  All these losers that Dohn has promoted, and Chancellor Block ends up interviewing someone that Guerrero has maybe kept under wraps.  This is the one thing that restores my faith in DG ... he has a lot of bullets we don't know about, and he will pull out all the stops for us to get a good HC

by Dante on Dec 19, 2007 4:38 PM PST   0 recs

Brian Dohn Is The Mystery Candidate
Sources tell me it's Dohn.

He has the full approval of DW.

Word is that the Chancellor has made a special effort to interview Dohn, tonight, because there are other schools that are making an intense effort to hire him. One is Washington, but the offer is strongly conditioned on Dohn's ability to bring DW with him.

That won't be difficult. Sources tell me that Dohn has become so attached to DW that DW is a captive of Dohn's flights of fancy and vice versa.

He can take individual pieces of data and assemble them to get the total package and the right answer.  I know that I wasn't able to put it together - I thought it was Streeter.

Personally, I'm still holding out hope for Petersen:

"Hi, honey, it's me.   Yeah, I'm still at the airport.

... Weird thing just happened.  There was a problem with the flight out of Seattle to Honolulu, so they had to route me through LAX and make me hop a flight there.

... Yeah, I'm in LAX now.

... No, not for another four hours.

... No, I'll be alright, I might just meet some friends for lunch in Westwood.

...  Well, uh, they're new friends.  Dan and Gene.  Good guys.

... Sorry, honey, I'm losing your signal!  I'll call you when I land.  I love you!"

Is there any substance to this story?
Not to be a jerk, but this is utterly ridiculous!  The chancellor is meeting with a... person, male, living on the planet earth, who...I can't say his name...because I don't know it...

This is just trolling for a response from an already anxious and on edge fan base.  It serves no informative purpose nor does it provide those of us following online any point of discussion.  Lame reporting!

by isodore on Dec 19, 2007 5:35 PM PST   0 recs

Word has it ...
the mystery candidate is Nick Saban.  In spite of the fact that he's apparently "happy" at Bama, nobody believes it.  Now that Les Miles has finished helping Michigan find their new HC, he's now brokering Saban to UCLA.

by B-Dub on Dec 19, 2007 5:40 PM PST   0 recs

If it's Hawkins...
... I'll GLADLY take him.

The guy turned around Williamette in a lower division, took over after Koetter left Boise State and still got to a 9-win season his 5th year there (i.e. after all of Koetter's guys were gone) despite having only FOUR senior starters on the team.

He went 2-10 in Colorado his first year (coming off the Barnett mess) and in this, his 2nd year, has gone 6-6 and is set to play in a Bowl Game.

I'll take him.

Options
  1. Pat Hill
  2. Dan Hawkins
  3. Bronco Mendenhall (hasn't been mentioned in the past few days as one of the top options, and would totally make sense given Block's secrecy and all)

by MbahABako on Dec 19, 2007 6:07 PM PST   0 recs

I've been thinking the same thing
66 pointed out that the AD at Texas Tech and DG are good friends, so that might also point to Leach.

I think Mendenhall would be more likely to come to Westwood than Leach.

Brian Kelly?
No inside info, but no leaks either.  He is the right man for the UCLA job and would have us in a BCS game within 2 years.  Also he would never, ever get pulled down by Walker.  He is a force and I can't believe, the fools at Michigan and Arkansas missed on this guy.

by Bear on Dec 19, 2007 6:07 PM PST   0 recs

This could be a GREAT MOVE
This guy has turned things around a Temple for gods sake.  He has recruited the the best classes in the MAC! And the University LOVES Him they pay him almost double what the other MAC coaches make. The Players are getting better each game (according to their fans blogs)
This guy sounds like a great Al Davis find!  Yes Nester, some of us still respect one of the most important figures in Football, and the Father of the "Nation" who's name you stole and who's, team you trashed with your diatribe against Kiffin. ok ok
I am just sore because he picked on my Raiders, if anyone knows what it is like to follow a bad team it is N, so he should know you don't need more help.  I have spent my life with UCLA on Sat and Raiders on Sun, the last 5 years I have had to cycle that with massive doses of prozac Monday through Friday so I could start over again on Sat.

by Bear on Dec 19, 2007 7:49 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

OK, I may be on board
He really has done a nice job there.  #1 recruiting class the last 3 years in the MAC- it isn't a BCS conference, but it has put outa bunch of quality players (Big Ben, Moss, etc.) It is certainly a risky hire, and most of us would like to see more of a sure thing (i.e. HC experience at a BCS school), but he could be interesting.  A potential negative could be his desire to go back to Penn State (his alma mater) post Paterno, but I am thinking that is Greg Schiano's to lose anyway. Of course, it would be ok to actually have other schools interested in our HC- We couldnt even get our ex HC hired at the worst program in D1-A..Duke. Like I said, I could be on board, and I encourage others to check him out too before passing judgement. Good call Bear.

How much money are we looking to pay the new HC and who decides how much to pay?  Given the taxes and the cost of living in LA, realistically how good of a coach can we get?

We went from the relic
Norm Chow, born sometime during the Ice Age, to Golden, who was born in 1969! That's just great.

"he could be Penn St.'s next coach"....yeah let's just hire him so he can bolt to his alma mater once the oldest relic of all, Joe Paterno, finally decides to call it quits!

Eh
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_Owls_football#Current_coach

I don't know how to do the block quotes, but he's definitely accomplished a lot considering where he's at (broke their 20 game losing streak, first coach to win 4 games since 2002, raising their defense from 118th to 49th in one season). He actually should have had five wins this season, if not for a completely blown call at the UConn game that I caught on ESPN.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hG8Foe1-HoE

The guy can definitely coach. Maybe he's being considered as a second tier candidate, if we're still waiting until after the bowl games to talk to Mendenhall, or Leach, etc.

by sevascisum on Dec 19, 2007 7:47 PM PST   0 recs

AGE? PENN ST?
Come on, some of you just like to Bitch.  Gruden was young, Shanahan was Young, Kiffin was born in 76.  Leaders lead. And if you are afraid they will go to their alma matters, that leaves you with RN.  Eveyone has a AM, if he is good and we want him to stay its our job to make him want to stay.  LSU kept Miles, Rutgers kept Schiano, if we hire Golden AND he wins here then it is up to the Bruin Nation and DG to get him to stay.  But lets worry about that when we win something more important than the Blog Bowl.

by Bear on Dec 19, 2007 8:00 PM PST   0 recs

I have no problem with his age
I brought it up along with Chow to show that DG seems to be all over the place with this search process, considering two extremes of the spectrum. He doesn't seem to have any particular type of candidate in mind. He seems to be taking a "dart board" approach to this whole process. It is peculiar and frustrating.

And I do think that the Penn St. situation is a legitimate concern. Any modicum of success here will translate into certain speculation of him taking over for Paterno. At the very least, it will be an annoying distraction. I have no idea if he considers it his "dream job" a la Howland for UCLA, but certainly something to consider, all things being equal beween candidates.

I Still Have Hope
I'm not giving up on my first choice, Chris Peterson although now if we were to somehow snare him it'd have to be after the first of the year.

Failing that, I could live with either Skippy or Mooch.  Leach, for whatever reason, just doesn't seem like a good fit at Westwood.  Terry Bowden would be interesting, too, but again, would he be a good fit?

by Minnesota Bruinfan on Dec 19, 2007 8:09 PM PST   0 recs

Besides
Lets not lose track of the fact that UCLA is a better job than Penn State.  Don't let Walker/Dohn Donh/Walker fool you.  Penn State is not in the SEC, its in the Big 10, by far the worst of the big 6 and, UCLA is in the Pac 10 the second best of the Big 6.  UCLA has a MUCH better campus, location, reputation and recruiting base.  Have him spend a winter in LA then ask his wife how bad she wants to go to State College PA.

by Bear on Dec 19, 2007 8:10 PM PST   0 recs

GOLDWALK
Potentially bad scenario - if Block and Golden are drinking buddies from Virginia, we may be offering Golden an opportunity to showcase his talent as the future Paterno replacement over Schiano; the payback Block gets is a focus on prepping Walker to take over.

If this hire happens, be sure to read the fine print in the contract...

by East Coast Bruin on Dec 19, 2007 8:19 PM PST   0 recs

Hold the phone guys
We have an unconfirmed rumor "reported" by Perelman that Block is talking to someone.  Then we have that most awesomest "reporter" ever, Doh!, confirming that it's Al Downing - oops, make that Al Golden.

I reject the notion that a guy with a 5-19 record would get a chance to interview at UCLA.  His supporters here tout the following:

  • He broke Temple's 20 game losing streak
  • He's the first to win 4 games since 2002
  • He raised their defense from 118th to 49th in one season.
  • He actually should have had five wins this season, if not for a completely blown call at the UConn game.
  • He really has done a nice job there.
  • He has the #1 recruiting class the last 3 years in the MAC (but if he's had No. 1 Juniors, Sophomores and Freshman, how come his record sucks so bad, but I digress.)
  • Players are getting better each game (according to their fans blogs)
  • This guy sounds like a great Al Davis find!
This is his resume.  The only thing missing is staying at the Holiday Inn Express.

This is the home run hire?  Those who think this kind of record is what we need at UCLA are delusional.  Frankly, if Golden is White, I would take CTS's case that his firing was racially motivated.

But remember, before anything else.  There is an unconfirmed report on a blog about a rumor of a meeting with an unnamed guy, and then an inherently unreliable post from the most unreliable reporter in town throwing out a totally absurd candidate.  Does anyone remember Gypsy Boots?  He is only slightly more absurd than Golden as a candidate.

so are you saying we should go after Steve Spurrier? I mean he has coached some of the game's greatest QB's and coached his team to a national title. I wholeheartedly agree with you regarding that point.

Additionally, I too, would be extremely averse to the CHOKER combination. Talk about stank. That duo would have UCLA mired in another 10 years of mediocrity, repeating the mistakes that have led to failure in the past.

Neuheisel interview
Frank Hughes of the Tacoma News Tribune will have an interview with Neuheisel in Thursday's edition. From my time in Seattle, Hughes comes across as just a good solid reporter.  www.thenewstribune.com  The sportstalk radio people in Seattle think the LA media is focusing too much on the basketball pool and not enough on Neuheisel's pattern of lying.  As a Trojan fan, Leach and Petersen are the two coaches whom I fear most, followed by Chow despite the consensus on this board.  Leach really scares me.  To not even consider him is criminal to your fan base.

by PortTrojan on Dec 19, 2007 10:22 PM PST   0 recs

Agree on Leach
The fact that his candidacy was never viable will always be a source of great consternation.  And I have more than a few Southern Cal friends who are quite pleased he's not a candidate.

I, however, am not pleased.  At all.

by Offside on Dec 19, 2007 10:30 PM PST   0 recs

Thanks for your second post
Now to repeat my question from your first post.  If it's not too difficult, what are you talking about?  Is it your position that Nestor is touting Al Golden?  I invite you to locate that post and direct us all to it.  I don't remember that, but maybe I'm wrong.  I counted I think two guys who thought Golden was a great candidate, and both of them if I recall correctly were first-time posters.  So my question again - what are you talking about?

by Fox 71 on Dec 20, 2007 4:39 AM PST   0 recs

Golden
I don't recall seeing folks touting Golden as UCLA's savior- I think my point (and otehrs) was merely that he is not as much of a laughable candidate as he may appear to be at first glance.  Do we deserve better (i.e. more experience)? Of course.  Will we forever look back on the overlooking of Leach and wonder what could have been? Perhaps.  But given the slate of candidates that apparently we are pusuing in Mooch, Walker, and Chow, Golden is no worse and quite possibly better.  He has more HC experience, and probably more upside. Of course, that is my opinion, and it very well may suck. It is upside potential, of course, that left us where we find ourselves today.

by DallasBruin on Dec 20, 2007 8:11 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

We have not given up on
Leach, Mendenhall, et al.

They have bowl games to play -- and we may be holding off until they are over.

There is absolutely no reason to believe that they are off our list.

Those of us who want Leach have to keep his name in "positive" play lest we lower our expectations and take some one less talented.

sjh

by Class of 66 on Dec 20, 2007 8:30 AM PST   0 recs

Agreed.
If we lose this weekend, that should eliminate DW.  Perhaps DG is counting on it similar to how he counted on KD losing to SUC?  I would actually be ashamed if we were to announce Bronco as our new HC right before the Bowl game.  Two weeks in advance (i.e Mich w/ RR) but we are too close right now.  So we wait, and trust that DG will do his best job.  The only certainty is that not all of us will be happy with the hire.
