End Of The Clown Show

It is over.

Time to break out our party hats:

There is not much to analyze here. The score wasn't as bad as it could be because the TrOJie offense was sloppy. It could have been much uglier than it was.

Now it is on to the coaching search, which should not include the DyNoMite DeWayne or any one associated with the cult of Donahue.

We have no interest in a self-promoting also-ran coordinator, who has never had any head coaching experience in his life, and whose defense can only match up against predictable Os. Not to mention his D plays without discipline and out of control.

So no a DeWayne Walker will not be acceptable answer at UCLA. He also needs to clean his locker out. Actually every clown coach associated with Dorrell needs to clean out his locker.

We need a clean break from last 5 years.

Party on Karl. Party on Jay. Party on DeWayne.

I am sure you guys can get ready for your future gigs at some golf course near you.

For the rest of us we are done with the clown show.

Thread it up in what should be our first post-Dorrellian football thread.

Yeah baby.

GO BRUINS.

stranger things have happened

by Linguica on Dec 1, 2007 5:10 PM PST   0 recs

D didn't play bad
they made some great plays threw out the game. It's kinda hard to win when you don't have an O.

by uclaov1 on Dec 1, 2007 5:11 PM PST   0 recs

"didn't play bad"
Should never be the standard of excellence at UCLA. I could give a rat's behind about DeWayne's moral victory. He needs to go.

by Nestor on Dec 1, 2007 5:12 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

can't do it all on D
as we saw today...

by RScal on Dec 1, 2007 5:12 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

agree...
D did a solid job.  same old story, with turnovers, penalties, and the offense giving it right back to the opposition.  if we had an even half decent coach who could figure out a half decent offense, we win the game...  see ya dorrell.

by bruinthug98 on Dec 1, 2007 5:20 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

D did a "solid job" - so what>
Against a mediocre Southern Cal offense that has been mediocre all season. That doesn't mean DeWayne deserves to remain at Westwood.

And there were all those stupid penalties.

He still hasn't showed he has no clue on how to defend the spread.

by Nestor on Dec 1, 2007 5:21 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

then who
i doubt the next HC would bring in a better DC then Walker.

by uclaov1 on Dec 1, 2007 6:06 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

It will be up to next HC
And he can decide whether he wants Walker or not. But Walker should not be forced upon him.

He is not anything special.

If you think Walker is something special, you have pretty low standards.

by Nestor on Dec 1, 2007 6:07 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

No one said
he was something special, but he has done great job in the time he has been here. Before he got here UCLA was one of the worst D teams in the Nation. Just ask yourself this, is our Defense better then it was two years ago?

by uclaov1 on Dec 1, 2007 6:14 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Thats a dumb question
Two years ago our D was one of the worst in the country. So DeWayne improved it a bit and put together some decent games here and there.

But his success rate is just about as good Phil Snow's success rate under Toledo. He had some good games and some terrible ones.

Nothing special.

If you think Walker should keep the DC gig based on two games against SuC last two years, then you are showing the same idiotic symptoms of Dorrellistas who supported the Doofus for last 5 years.

DeWayne Walker is an above average DC, who still needs lot more experience. He can get it somewhere else besides UCLA.

I want him gone.

by Nestor on Dec 1, 2007 6:16 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

you said it yourself
he is "an above average DC" and with more experience he might just become an Excellent DC. and do not put me in the same group as a Dorrelliast, i never liked the hire.

by uclaov1 on Dec 1, 2007 6:27 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Uh yeah
UCLA needs more than "above average" in its next coaching staff.

by Nestor on Dec 1, 2007 6:31 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

if the next HC
keeps DW then good if not lets just hope he finds a better one.

by uclaov1 on Dec 1, 2007 6:35 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I think
I will agree with that. But my only concern is that next HC should not feel pressured to keep DW as his DC. That will not be a healthy situation.

by Nestor on Dec 1, 2007 6:36 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I agree

by uclaov1 on Dec 1, 2007 6:38 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

uh...
nobody is suggesting Walker stick around. just giving credit where its due.  apparently every single other reliable source in college football thinks sc is one of the most high powered teams right now (ESPN, SI, etc), and I'm giving credit to the guys that battled on that side of the ball... because its warranted. nobody is suggesting he become the head coach or even stick around, so just chill.

2 Rose Bowls
and zero Rose Bowl victories in last 22 years. How did it ever come to this? Will the insulated admin ever get it right? We can only speculate as to where DG and admin are with resptect coaching search. Who will ultimately be the decision maker? that's what makes me nervous and very skeptical. Is DG the lead on this one?

It IS over, right?
yeah, the loss wasn't a blowout - probably the only thing he can say on his own behalf.

After five years of the vaunted West coast offense - still today observed frequently using pass plays for yardage less than half of the amount required for a first down - after five years of blaming the OCs and canning them - and am I wrong to posit that Jay Norvell was the W-O-R-S-T OC hired by Toast (yeah, Axmann, even a stiff like YOU get a pass)? for an offense that is too complicated for everyone on the field except a talented, disciplined defense, Please tell me the Dullard era is finito?

The really sad part....
Is that smug SOB Cheaty Petey gets to run off believing that he has a great team, when he doesn't.

UCLA could have won this game if they had a coach with HALF a brain and an OOC with HALF a brain.

As soon as the offense got a little mo in the 3rd Qtr they ran jackass trick or predictable plays that nixed all momentum and took us out of any chance to even get in FG position.

Unf*&%ing believable that we couldn't even get in FG range for Forbath...he just

Thanks a lot Markey for the fumble on your way out the door, thanks Austin for your fumble as well...sloppy players coached by a terrible coach.

UCLA could have kept this game a lot closer in the first half if not for ridiculous "run up the gut" Norvell idiocy as well as inability to complete a pass until the last possession.  Really a shame...

Good riddance DorVell you worthless pieces of crap and bring on a new world!!!

OK DG..........
Let's end this ridiculous charade right now.

Here are my choices as to  who I would like to take the reigns:

  1.  Chris Peterson
  2.  Steve Mariucci
  3.  Bill Cowher
  4.  Steve Spurrier
  5.  Kirk Ferentz
Peterson is my first choice; head and shoulders above anyone else.  I just think he'd be a great fit at Westwood.  I could live with Mooch, though.  Cowher, I know we have as much chance as a snowball in hell of getting but I've always liked the guys intensity.  I know some of you guys don't like Kirk Ferentz but if you give that guy talent he can coach.  But I don't think he'd be a real good fit at Westwood; he seems pretty happy in Iowa City.

As much as I hate Misery (for ripping my always and forever LOS ANGELES Rams from SoCal) I hope the Tigers do win so Ohio State goes to the Rose Bowl so they can work the Trojies.

1.5 million
That's what we are working with give or take ... we can go up if we feel like we have the right guy.

by Nestor on Dec 1, 2007 5:30 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I really want Paul Johnson
He's my number 1.  I would love to retain Walker, but that's more emotional because I see how hard our D plays. If he needs to go to get the right coach, I'm okay with it.

The funny thing about that picture, is that is the pinnacle of KD's career: A win over Northwestern in a third tier bowl game. in the same season he lost by more than 4 touchdowns twice.

"when you've seen how big the world is, how can you make due with this?"

by silverlakebruin on Dec 1, 2007 5:29 PM PST   0 recs

Clean House
The new HC should be free to choose his entire staff.

I don't want DW in the program. But, if the new HC wants him, that's OK with me.

Let's not tie DW to the position. We may lose good people who have other ideas.

One play says it all
Third quarter, S$C has just committed holding on third down.  Best case scenario, hold them to three points.  Worst case scenario, S$C gets 7 on a touchdown.  What does Duhllard do?  Accept the penalty, of course!  Result: S$C scores on next play, 7 points, 3 scores behind now!  Team gives up, realizing all hope is lost.

God, end this misery!

we don't deserve to go to a bowl game this year. ANd I don't want to see KD at the sidelines for one more game. And if KD isn't coaching I don't want DW to be allowed to coach the game and somehow win..and have people start talking about how he should be our next coach!

In the Words of Roberto Duran -- No Mas!
Let's just call it a year.

Does anyone want to see us play, again, this year? As if Oregon wasn't ugly enough 0-- we get this game.

Do you want to see any more of Norvell's offense. Connally's O line?

And, frankly, I've not been enamored with DW's defense. I remember Utah.

Rather than go to and lose a lower level bowl game, I'd rather close up, get a new coaching staff, and reopen with energy, in the spring.

Any thoughts
on prying Greg Schiano out of Rutgers?  I like his style.  I know he turned down the Hurricanes so he is likely entrenched their, but from what I read the canes facilities are mediocre and some say it is not the job it once was.  My first choice is Petersen though.  Youtubed the BSU/OU game last night. Another Steaming Load..
First of all, those of you who thik the game was "better than you expected" or the "D" did good are seriusly mistaken. This game was almost as painful to watch as the OU game. It stunk up the barn major league! And it just goes to show you that a mediocre football team can make anyone play down to its level.

I think Dorrell is gone; my reason for this is that, despite the revenge motive USC had, this game was winnable (by UCLA). There was no cohesiveness, organization, or management of the Bruins' effort today. Their performance today showed that little or no organized thought went into the preparation of a game plan. The defense was only marginal and the offensive line (a.k.a., the offensive sieve) was horrendous.

Guerrero has got to be thinking that USC is a beatable team under Carroll if even Dorrell and his clowns can keep it close. All of its talent and all USC can do is be up 17-7 when it mattered (he was given the last touchdown as a going away present by Dorrell). If only we had a decent football coach things would have been vastly different.

..this latest addition to Dorrell's body of work is as corrupt and as rotten as the previous five or six efforts and smells to high heaven.

New Coach's Salary structure.
According to reports on Les Miles of LSU.
LSU=$3.5M a year.

That maybe a ball-park figure for a head coach now at a Major University.
And UCLA is a Major University.

Don't let Guerrero off the hook
It's been a painful 5 years to watch our Bruins come out of the gate hot, then come out flat for big games, lose games they SHOULD win, and mail-in the second half of the season.  Karl is a good Christian man, and I believe did a good job cleaning up the program left to him by Toledo and molding these kids to become better young men.  But this is big boy college football, and you need a great football mind, great recruiting and great hiring/mentoring of coordinators.  Unfortunately, Karl has not any of those very well in his 5 years.

But let's not drop this all in Karl's lap.  Karl was in over his head on Day 1.  I don't fault him for taking a job he was not ready for.  This was Dan G's first big hire, so he is squarely to blame here.  Let's not praise him when he announces Monday that Karl is gone... let's make sure we as alumni and fans put HIM on the hotseat.  He made a commitment to Basketball brining in and paying Ben-Ball (DG did MUCH better in his Second big hire).  Now let's see if he is going to commit real resources to Bruin Football.

I believe we need $2M to lure a Chris Peterson away from Boise State for Steve Mariucci into Westwood.  Imagine Cowen or Osaar in a Spread Offense?  With a front 5 that could open MONSTER holes for Bell next season without defenses stacking 8 in the box all the time?  Maybe our defense would not be on the field 75% of the game.

But mark my words--- D.G. will once again, go "on the cheap", and offer Kirk Ferenz or a good DII coach $1M - $1.25M.  Dan must either commit the money to football, or temper expectations that UCLA Football fans should be content with a clean program in the 8-4 to 6-6 season record range, and annual post-season bowl trips to Las Vegas (Pioneer Pure Vision), San Francisco (Emerald Bowl), and maybe San Diego (Holiday Bowl)on a good year.

It's a shame we are firing a man with good character and value because he is not a very good football head coach, but it would be a BIGGER shame to let Dan G think that his own black leather executive chair over in the Morgan Center is an warmer than Karl's has been
