"We're #4!" Billboard idea gaining ground

Bumped from the diaries. GO BRUINS. -N

We at DD posted our ideas on the "We're #4!" campaign earlier this week that included many strategies, 4-finger foam fingers (coming next week), new tshirts, sending mail to DG, and potentially a Billboard if there was interest.  We checked into the Billboard idea and found that it would take about $11,000 for a billbooard in West LA near campus (rates fluctuate) for the minimum rental period of a month (12'x24', cost includes artwork, example below and here).  A month is a great amount of time and it would be a great show of strength.  The question is ... is there enough interest in contributing money for this idea.

Without our prompting, yesterday 3 Bruin football fans pledged $600. So Nestor wanted us to post the idea here at BruinsNation to gauge what kind of interest there was here.  We are not asking for donations right now, just a sense of interest in participating in some way.

Here is how it would work.  We would set up a PayPal donation button on our site and set up some kind of counter that everyone could see, along with a timeframe to reach the goal.  If we reach the goal in the timeframe then we go ahead with it.  If we dont, we give all the money back (which is easy to do with PayPal with a simple click of a button).  Obviously, we dont want to have a situation where we publicize this and only get $400 donated. That would be bad. So its important to gauge if this will work first. We could have a vote on what the billboard would actually say, but it would be something like:  "We're #4!" (in BIG lettering centered); "Thank you Dan Guerrero and Karl Dorrell for your Commitment To Mediocrity";  and then underneath  "DumpDorrell.com".  Maybe we could have a ribbon on the top right corner with the words "Sleep well" or a "Football 101" tag on the upper right corner (as with our header on DD).

Fire away with your thoughts ... and any pledges if you wish.

12'x24' Billboard

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

I'll pitch in a hundy.

My vote for picture would be the "Save Football - Dump Dorrell" slogan maybe combined with an edited "UCLA - Champions made near here." logo.

I will contribute
I like:

"Thank you Dan Guerrero and Karl Dorrell for your Commitment To Mediocrity"

But I also really want a #4 foam finger.

foam finger
How about a foam hand with four fingers up that reads "we're # 4".

I'm in
I could probably kick in $150-200.

I sort of find the #4 reference confusing (maybe it's just me) and I don't think the average person would get it.

I think I prefer something more to the point or a message that simply says "Dear Dan Guerrero--Enough is Enough, We Need a New Coach" sort of billboard.  Although I do like the "Commitment to Mediocrity" slogan--it's funny and probably very embarrassing to DG and Dorrell.

But it would get media attention and, since we aren't hearing anything from DG, it appears we need to take action ourselves.

You Know What Would Be Great?
If you could put it in the spot of that dang Trojan All Access poster in Westwood. That would be nice.

The Medium Is The Message
I could support this effort but it has to be handled very tactfully.  Remember the words of Marshall McLuhen, "The medium is the message."  Even a subtle message will get massive attention in the local and national media.  Therefore, it must not embarrass the University and should stay away from looking like an attack on an individual.  I know we are all very frustrated with Dorrell, but I would argue any message that appears to be a personal attack will get dismissed, or even worse, lead to increased support.  The focus must be on performance, expectations for success and the need for change.

by Bruin77 on Oct 12, 2007 10:14 AM PDT   0 recs

Just curious
Would

"Commitment to Mediocrity" meet your guidelines?

by bluegold on Oct 12, 2007 10:19 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I Would Perfer A More Focused Message
While not as postive as I would like, how about something like:

Time For A Change in Direction

UCLA Football 2003 through 2007

Winning Percentage: .600

Pac-10 Conference Championships: 0

National Chamionships: 0

Paid for by Concerned Fans, Alumni and Former Players

"Winning one more game than we lose isn't bad it it?" Karl Dorrell, Football 101

by PasadenaBruin on Oct 12, 2007 12:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm with Bruin77
As much as we like to poke fun/take jabs at Dorrell, the billboard shouldn't come across as any sort of personal attack. This billboard will make the headlines and should reflect positively on those seeking a change.

I also believe the more subtle the catch phrase, the more powerful the message. I would be in favor of something along the lines of:

  • Save UCLA Football (big yellow block letters, on a solid, baby blue background with www.dumpdorrell.com below)
  • UCLA Football: It's Time for a Change

by norcalbruin95 on Oct 12, 2007 12:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, more is better...
I like the idea of more info on there. I don't like the "We're #4" idea at all, even with all the topspin it's getting from our colleagues at DumpDorrell.com. It's just too broad and sounds like we are ragging on the whole team instead of the bad coaching.
I may work with the Waves, but I'm still a Bruin!

It
It would show a great deal of tenacity if a group of us could come up with 11 grand for a month long billboard campaign.  This would hopefully make DG aware that we mean what we say as far as with holding donations from the athletic department until this clown is booted off of our campus!  Count me in for at least 200-300!

by Peter Petersen on Oct 12, 2007 10:21 AM PDT   0 recs

Billboard
Count me in for $100. However, I agree that the message is a bit ambiguous to the average fan. Also, specific location would be key (main thoroughfare or side street in Santa Monica?) towards reaching the target audience (Guerrero and Morgan Center) in an effective manner.

Another thought: Putting our feelings for the LAT aside, I think a full page ad with everything you would include on the billboard would be just as effective, probably would be cheaper, and potentially reach the "target audience" more effectively.

"If I don't do my job, I will get fired" -Karl Dorrell

by godblesstyus95 on Oct 12, 2007 10:30 AM PDT   0 recs

I suspect
but don't know, that a full-page ad would be much, much more expensive.  Also, it would only run for one day and the billboard would be up for a month (or whatever).

The billboard would probably also get mentioned in the LAT so you would be able to have both the billboard and a mention in the LAT that way.

by Barnes2JJ on Oct 12, 2007 10:34 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Great point
if we get this billboard, not only the LAT but other papers and radio stations would pick up on it too. You get more for what you pay for.  A month long campaign would reach a large number of people.

Two points
  1.  Has this ever been don anywhere else, where fans chip in for a billboard to demand a coaching change?  Are we making history?
  2.  Beware of backlash.  Like, wouldn't these clowns be better off donating their money to feed the homeless, how many Thanksgiving dinners would $11,000 buy, etc.

by bluegold on Oct 12, 2007 11:21 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

There have been banners
over Florida for Ron Zook
over Arkansas for Houston Nutt

not worried about the backlash of $11,000 when 10s of thousands of alums commit tens of millions of dollars every year to go to football games.

Rather than Save Football
I would like to see us come up with something along these lines:

UCLA - champions made here*.

   *Exception: UCLA football.

sponsored by www.dumpdorell.com

I don't agree with calling out DG on the billboard.  At the end of the day, he has done wonders with our bball program.  While I disagree with his actions regarding football, I don't think it would serve us well to call him out on the billboard.

by bruinliv on Oct 12, 2007 11:02 AM PDT   0 recs

we may run into trouble with this
although we have 1st amendment rights to make a political message using UCLA we might have a problem with using "Champions Made Here."  But we are not attorneys so who knows, maybe some of the lawyers here can address that.  Its a good message, but when driving will people really find the first part catchy enough to continue reading and get the REAL message?? Will the LAT or other media find it provocative enough to report on it so that we get additional benefits of promoting our cause?

The message has to be unequivocal that we demand a new direction in the football program.  Forceful enough to make the LAT and the evening news.

by bluegold on Oct 12, 2007 11:12 AM PDT   0 recs

Response to comments
There have been many good comments on this idea. I appreciate the suggestion that calling out DG and even KD by name may build sympathy.  That's probably true because there will always be people who feel they need to support whomever is being criticized or attacked in any way.  We will put it to a vote and see what people think.

The "We're #4" message is clear in our view because "We're #1" is probably one of the most recognized slogans in all of Americana. People who dont follow sports know what this refers to.  We are mocking that slogan with the obvious choice of #4.  The message is clear to everyone that UCLA football is NOT #1, and that whomever put up the message has a problem with that. The viewer doesn't need to know that we have averaged 4th place in the Pac-10 to know what our message is.

This is marketing, so the message has to be crisp, clear, and catchy.  "We need change" is not at all catchy as the main copy, especially in this time of political campaigning.  But those who made this point have a valid concern.  Here are some alternatives, with the first words in large lettering (again, we would put many of these to a vote, and we could add Football 101 or Sleep well tags on the corners):

We're #4!
UCLA Football:  A Commitment To Mediocrity.  This needs to change.

Love it
Count me in for at least $100.  Not flowin' in money but may be able to contribute more.

I'm with Bruin 77 on doing this tactfully & Barnes on making the billboard clear.

We know the reference made about being #4, Football 101 & Sleep Well but the average fan nor the public in general will not know what it means.  The public that has no association with UCLA could assist us as well.  Them just talking about it will create water cooler type buzz in the area.

I think "Commitment to Mediocrity" fits the bill.  I'm against the "Champions Made Near Here" idea that was suggested.  I don't think it is a good idea to rain on something that UCLA should celebrate.  That would be a slap to all the great teams throughout our history at the expense of getting rid of KD.   It would really sting but I don't think it is the right thing to do.

Guerrero needs to be the one to focus on.  A lot of negative buzz will be created by this.  We need him to feel the pressure so that he MUST make a change.

by BlueReign on Oct 12, 2007 11:35 AM PDT   0 recs

I love the billboard idea
But here is what I would use it for:
Wyoming 24 UCLA 21
Arizona 52 UCLA 14
U$C 66 UCLA 19
Utah 44 UCLA 6
Notre Dame 20 UCLA 6

"It is what it is." - Karl Dorrell

Save UCLA Football.

I Like This Message
I would add are the dates of those games.  There are some other games that probably should be included like Fresno State  and Florida State.  Also, while I know the $c blow out two years ago is one of the Dorrell embarrassments, I hate to give them any recognition and the other teams were doormats compared to $c that was competing for the NC.

by Bruin77 on Oct 12, 2007 12:10 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed
I like this type of approach as well, and would be willing to donate. Its much more effective, to the point, and clearly understandable (as opposed to the "we're #4!" idea).

by MbahABako on Oct 12, 2007 2:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Very well done
I like it and it looks good.  I also love the "It is what it is" quote.  It's powerful but Dorrell would surely come out and say it was taken out of context.

The only problem with the sign is if someone didn't know better, they would think we are only harping on Dorrell for those four games listed (by the way, what happened to 66-19?).

But not bad.  Not bad at all.

by Barnes2JJ on Oct 12, 2007 9:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Up to $1600
from my count on DD and BN, which is not bad.  It would take more than just pledges but if we get that to say $5,000 in just pledges then maybe we wouldn't look bad if we put it up and still didn't reach our goal. Dont want to see backlash from this effort.
editor, DumpDorrell.com ... formerly posted as DumpDorrell

by BruinCore on Oct 12, 2007 11:47 AM PDT   0 recs

how about
  1. copying DD's running list of Dorrell "accomplishments" with a tag line at the bottom saying, "Please End the Reign of Mediocrity" and www.dumpdorrell.com in the corner; or
  2. listing a bunch of "Dorrellisms" with the same tag line and reference to DD.com
I think the first option states in a very non-offensive and easy to understand way why we think Duh-rell needs to go.

And ok, maybe the second option is a bit offensive, but it is my personal favorite. Or, along those lines, how about something like:

"Dear Mr. Guerrero:

UCLA should start disciplining its resources immediately.  We are past the implementation stage with Mr. Dorrell and it is time for him to leave"

I am sure you guys can improve upon this, but the idea is to weave a bunch of Dorrellisms into a letter imploring Mr. Guerrero to Fire Karl Dorrell.

by Koach Karl I on Oct 12, 2007 11:53 AM PDT   0 recs

Too many words
It has to be short and sweet so that people can read it, then do read it AND then get the message at the same time. That is harder than it looks, and why good copyrighters make millions.

But good ideas.

If you actually do go through with it, I think you're idea about paypal is excellent. That aside. You might want to post as a heading something like "Donate just $10 for a new coach." I remember you mentioned that DD.com had as many as 3000 hits after the Notre Dame loss. With that much traffic, and with all the emotion flowing through Bruins after another loss, I think you could raise the $11,000 in no time. $10 isn't very much money so I think people would be more inclined to donate if you mentioned it.

We should not mention USC
This has nothing to d owith them, and everything to do with our school being able to have the football program we all know can be had.  To mention the skirts on a billboard about KD would serve no purpose other than to add fuel to the arguement that we are always in their shado.

Do think #4 is too ambiguous.

Love idea of scores of key losses with low opacity on background -- they are there but not focal point of billboard.

I like quoting Coach -- it ties to high standards and respectability. He may not like it though, and the last thing we want to do is upset him.

Here is what we are up against
For those who think we don't need this, that its obvious Dorrell is gone, check this out from Dohn:
Many fans are calling for Dorrell's head right now. How hot it the hot seat for Dorrell and is there any rumblings that he will get fired if he continues his inconsistency this year?

The seat is warm, but, again, this is only the half way point of the season. Based on feed back I've received on this blog, I know some folks will hate to hear this, but my sources tell me it is way to early for any decision to be made, and the amount of injuries the team sustained this year is a factor. I do know it would benefit Dorrell greatly for his team to play with more consistency, win or lose.

Injuries are staring to turn into a trump card for Dorrell.  Notice how anyone and everyone with the most minor issue is now getting medical help?! More Dohn:

Do you see the mindset of UCLA towards the football program changing?

No. UCLA sold 49,000 season tickets, the most in its history. The football program churns out a ton of revenue, far more than men's basketball, and has done so despite being average the last decade. I think men's basketball will always be No. 1, with football a distant second.

Starting to see a pattern here?? It's just Dohn and he may or may not have the true story, and he certainly doesn't understand UCLA tradition like we do. But it still is out there. More Dohn:

Does all the (complaining) and moaning on the internet sites have any effect upon the Athletic Department?

If you are talking about the higher-up administrators, the answer is no. There are so many factors that go into decisions, not to mention how busy they are, being influenced every time the fans become irate (pretty much after any loss) is not smart business, I am told.

It's obvious we need to make a strong statement to prove these points wrong.  A month long billboard campaign shows that this isn't some temporary whining that will go away.  Just some thoughts ...

Mediocre
mediocre adjective a mediocre performance ordinary, average, middling, middle-of-the-road, uninspired, undistinguished, indifferent, unexceptional, unexciting, unremarkable, run-of-the-mill, pedestrian, prosaic, lackluster, forgettable, amateur, amateurish; informal OK, so-so, 'comme ci, comme ça', plain-vanilla, fair-to-middling, no great shakes, not up to much, bush-league. antonym excellent.

Put up the definition with all of the scores in the background.

Punch Headline: UCLA Excellence Everywhere But On the Football Field?

Or something like that. I'll bet people stop to read the definition of mediocrity and the understated scores. When it first goes up we may want to pass out leaflets to pedestrians with all of the Stats DD has developed.

This isn't the sale of a bar of soap so it need not be a quick hitter. This isn't for drive-by impact.

More than anything, I hope it attracts significant press attention and stories. To that extent, having the "facts of failure" on the board are important.

And that would be enough to get the point across.  I like the idea of looking at the ad from the macro level (UCLA Excellence) and point out the one flaw (football).  And the solution "dump dorrell" rests within the sponsor information.  It is simple and to the point.  And avoids the legal issues of using "Champions Made Here"

Tommy Tuberville
They tried to force him out of Auburn a few years ago and tried to hire someone behind his back.  I think, given the opportunity, he would leave Auburn happily.  He is a great coach and I think UCLA could be a good place for him.

We also need someone that has recruiting ties outside of just California.  Pete Carroll was smart in recruiting out of California.  With Tuberville, we'd have ties to the South (hopefully Texas and Florida) as well as California.

by drummersix on Oct 12, 2007 1:41 PM PDT   0 recs

While having ties outside California is nice
I think it's much more important that he have ties to California. The state produces some of the best athletes in the nation and you can certainly build a team with only California athletes. Look at SC in their first couple successful years with PC. It was nearly all California kids. Only in the past 2 or 3 years have they expanded nationwide. It's key we take back California from SC before we start worrying about the rest of the country. Just take a look at what Howland has done with basketball. He's corned California and has his pick of California players and thats been working out well for him.

I'm out
KD's toast, writting is on the wall. DG's already looking for another coach.

Guys, I'm not convinced this would be a good thing for us.

If SC fans with all their money had done this during the Hackett days, I'd have a picture of it, even today, blow it up every year! I'd send it to every SC fan I know and never let them live down or forget that they used to SuC!

Not interested in leaving that kind of legacy for any future anti-UCLA fodder.

But I respect your passion and wish you guys the best in this project.

I THINK I GOT IT.
Something direct, and simple to read, and also possible parody of the 100 Titles Campaign slogan and the yellow "C's" everywhere:
December 27, 2006: FSU 44, UCLA 27
September 15, 2007:  Utah 44, UCLA 6
October 2, 2007:  Notre Dame 20, UCLA 6

UCLA FOOTBALL:
Excuses Made Here

Just make the billboard BLUE, make the letters
YELLOW/ GOLD, and make the "L's" white or red or blue outlined in yellow or something.

Plus, "Excuses Made Here" can serve as a clear parody/ satire of the Champions Made Here slogan, so it cant be touched.

Thoughts?

WHY NOT US? WHY NOT NOW?

AWESOME
I love this approach, but don't forget to add in the Arizona and Wyoming games. God that Wyoming game was absolutely brutal.

Is that the best use?
Shouldn't we all just write committment letters to Dan G. that we will pledge x amount the da Karl leaves  to pay for a new coach?

I was in the "Dynasty" billboard, twice!
So I'm definitely in for this!

I really like this
But it doesn't exactly work for the billboard.

How's this (which I posted in another thread):
DOESN'T WESTWOOD DESERVE A GOOD FOOTBALL COACH?

Looks awesome
but the writing needs to be bigger (which will, unfortunately, make the billboard not look so great) and I suspect there are some copyright issues, too.

But it looks great visually.

What's the law about using someone's
image?  I've seen cases on it, but I can't remember the details.

Yeah I had my concerns
especially with using the picture of the Rose Bowl.

But I didn't actually expect my mock up to be chosen, I just... needed to do something to express my discontent.

And I forgot who came up with the slogan I used, but it's the one I'd vote for.  It's got a nice ring to it, it's respectful, it's to the point.
