"We're #4!" Billboard idea gaining ground
Bumped from the diaries. GO BRUINS. -N
We at DD posted our ideas on the "We're #4!" campaign earlier this week that included many strategies, 4-finger foam fingers (coming next week), new tshirts, sending mail to DG, and potentially a Billboard if there was interest. We checked into the Billboard idea and found that it would take about $11,000 for a billbooard in West LA near campus (rates fluctuate) for the minimum rental period of a month (12'x24', cost includes artwork, example below and here). A month is a great amount of time and it would be a great show of strength. The question is ... is there enough interest in contributing money for this idea.
Without our prompting, yesterday 3 Bruin football fans pledged $600. So Nestor wanted us to post the idea here at BruinsNation to gauge what kind of interest there was here. We are not asking for donations right now, just a sense of interest in participating in some way.
Here is how it would work. We would set up a PayPal donation button on our site and set up some kind of counter that everyone could see, along with a timeframe to reach the goal. If we reach the goal in the timeframe then we go ahead with it. If we dont, we give all the money back (which is easy to do with PayPal with a simple click of a button). Obviously, we dont want to have a situation where we publicize this and only get $400 donated. That would be bad. So its important to gauge if this will work first. We could have a vote on what the billboard would actually say, but it would be something like: "We're #4!" (in BIG lettering centered); "Thank you Dan Guerrero and Karl Dorrell for your Commitment To Mediocrity"; and then underneath "DumpDorrell.com". Maybe we could have a ribbon on the top right corner with the words "Sleep well" or a "Football 101" tag on the upper right corner (as with our header on DD).
Fire away with your thoughts ... and any pledges if you wish.
12'x24' Billboard

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

I'm in.
My vote for picture would be the "Save Football - Dump Dorrell" slogan maybe combined with an edited "UCLA - Champions made near here." logo.

I will contribute
"Thank you Dan Guerrero and Karl Dorrell for your Commitment To Mediocrity"
But I also really want a #4 foam finger.

I sort of find the #4 reference confusing (maybe it's just me) and I don't think the average person would get it.
I think I prefer something more to the point or a message that simply says "Dear Dan Guerrero--Enough is Enough, We Need a New Coach" sort of billboard. Although I do like the "Commitment to Mediocrity" slogan--it's funny and probably very embarrassing to DG and Dorrell.
But it would get media attention and, since we aren't hearing anything from DG, it appears we need to take action ourselves.

I also believe the more subtle the catch phrase, the more powerful the message. I would be in favor of something along the lines of:

Another thought: Putting our feelings for the LAT aside, I think a full page ad with everything you would include on the billboard would be just as effective, probably would be cheaper, and potentially reach the "target audience" more effectively.

I suspect
The billboard would probably also get mentioned in the LAT so you would be able to have both the billboard and a mention in the LAT that way.

Two points
- Has this ever been don anywhere else, where fans chip in for a billboard to demand a coaching change? Are we making history?
- Beware of backlash. Like, wouldn't these clowns be better off donating their money to feed the homeless, how many Thanksgiving dinners would $11,000 buy, etc.

Response to comments
The "We're #4" message is clear in our view because "We're #1" is probably one of the most recognized slogans in all of Americana. People who dont follow sports know what this refers to. We are mocking that slogan with the obvious choice of #4. The message is clear to everyone that UCLA football is NOT #1, and that whomever put up the message has a problem with that. The viewer doesn't need to know that we have averaged 4th place in the Pac-10 to know what our message is.
This is marketing, so the message has to be crisp, clear, and catchy. "We need change" is not at all catchy as the main copy, especially in this time of political campaigning. But those who made this point have a valid concern. Here are some alternatives, with the first words in large lettering (again, we would put many of these to a vote, and we could add Football 101 or Sleep well tags on the corners):
We're #4!
UCLA Football: A Commitment To Mediocrity. This needs to change.

Love it
I'm with Bruin 77 on doing this tactfully & Barnes on making the billboard clear.
We know the reference made about being #4, Football 101 & Sleep Well but the average fan nor the public in general will not know what it means. The public that has no association with UCLA could assist us as well. Them just talking about it will create water cooler type buzz in the area.
I think "Commitment to Mediocrity" fits the bill. I'm against the "Champions Made Near Here" idea that was suggested. I don't think it is a good idea to rain on something that UCLA should celebrate. That would be a slap to all the great teams throughout our history at the expense of getting rid of KD. It would really sting but I don't think it is the right thing to do.
Guerrero needs to be the one to focus on. A lot of negative buzz will be created by this. We need him to feel the pressure so that he MUST make a change.

how about
- copying DD's running list of Dorrell "accomplishments" with a tag line at the bottom saying, "Please End the Reign of Mediocrity" and www.dumpdorrell.com in the corner; or
- listing a bunch of "Dorrellisms" with the same tag line and reference to DD.com
And ok, maybe the second option is a bit offensive, but it is my personal favorite. Or, along those lines, how about something like:
"Dear Mr. Guerrero:
UCLA should start disciplining its resources immediately. We are past the implementation stage with Mr. Dorrell and it is time for him to leave"
I am sure you guys can improve upon this, but the idea is to weave a bunch of Dorrellisms into a letter imploring Mr. Guerrero to Fire Karl Dorrell.

Do think #4 is too ambiguous.
Love idea of scores of key losses with low opacity on background -- they are there but not focal point of billboard.
I like quoting Coach -- it ties to high standards and respectability. He may not like it though, and the last thing we want to do is upset him.
I'm confident we can find the right words and tone.

Here is what we are up against
The seat is warm, but, again, this is only the half way point of the season. Based on feed back I've received on this blog, I know some folks will hate to hear this, but my sources tell me it is way to early for any decision to be made, and the amount of injuries the team sustained this year is a factor. I do know it would benefit Dorrell greatly for his team to play with more consistency, win or lose.
Injuries are staring to turn into a trump card for Dorrell. Notice how anyone and everyone with the most minor issue is now getting medical help?! More Dohn:
No. UCLA sold 49,000 season tickets, the most in its history. The football program churns out a ton of revenue, far more than men's basketball, and has done so despite being average the last decade. I think men's basketball will always be No. 1, with football a distant second.
Starting to see a pattern here?? It's just Dohn and he may or may not have the true story, and he certainly doesn't understand UCLA tradition like we do. But it still is out there. More Dohn:
If you are talking about the higher-up administrators, the answer is no. There are so many factors that go into decisions, not to mention how busy they are, being influenced every time the fans become irate (pretty much after any loss) is not smart business, I am told.
It's obvious we need to make a strong statement to prove these points wrong. A month long billboard campaign shows that this isn't some temporary whining that will go away. Just some thoughts ...

Mediocre
Put up the definition with all of the scores in the background.
Punch Headline: UCLA Excellence Everywhere But On the Football Field?
Or something like that. I'll bet people stop to read the definition of mediocrity and the understated scores. When it first goes up we may want to pass out leaflets to pedestrians with all of the Stats DD has developed.
This isn't the sale of a bar of soap so it need not be a quick hitter. This isn't for drive-by impact.
More than anything, I hope it attracts significant press attention and stories. To that extent, having the "facts of failure" on the board are important.

And that would be enough to get the point across. I like the idea of looking at the ad from the macro level (UCLA Excellence) and point out the one flaw (football). And the solution "dump dorrell" rests within the sponsor information. It is simple and to the point. And avoids the legal issues of using "Champions Made Here"

Guys, I'm not convinced this would be a good thing for us.
If SC fans with all their money had done this during the Hackett days, I'd have a picture of it, even today, blow it up every year! I'd send it to every SC fan I know and never let them live down or forget that they used to SuC!
Not interested in leaving that kind of legacy for any future anti-UCLA fodder.

Just make the billboard BLUE, make the letters

Plus, "Excuses Made Here" can serve as a clear parody/ satire of the Champions Made Here slogan, so it cant be touched.
