BCS Championship Game Thread

So the National Championship game is on tonight. And I am sure many of us will be watching it. I don't care much for either team. But I guess I will root for OH-IO since a good buddy of mine (a huge fan of the Sweatervest) has promised me a six pack of Magic Hat if I root for the team in red. Okay, fine. Whatever for free beer. Go Buckeyes.

The Bruins have taken on both of these programs in football, and have scoreboard on both from the last time we took them on. (Yeah, we are such a basketball school). Last time the Bruins took on one of these was two weeks after 9-11, when Foster and company beat the Buckeyes at the Rose Bowl:

AP Photo

And, in case you are wondering when was the last time the Bruins took on the Gators in football, it was 1987, when Aikman and crew beat Florida in the Aloha Bowl (20-17).

The kick off is set for 8:00 pm EST.

BTW, on a football note, per reports on local radio, Dorrell is officially going to scapegoat his OC - Jim Svoboda - this week by firing him, and apparently will take over play calling duties himself. This, of course, will bring nothing new, considering Svoboda was all but a lame duck since the Cal game. And UCLA's offense was still dogsh!t even after Dorrell took over the O starting with the Cal game. Anyways. This means KD will have no one else to scapegoat next season.

If you have thoughts on Svoboda or if you are watching the game and want to share your thoughts, impressions on the game or voice what it feels like to watch a team led by real head football coaches, then fire away.

This is your BCS Championship game thread.

GO BRUINS.

the can
is he gonna get fired, or demoted?  because he seemed capable at QB coach.

by ranelar on Jan 8, 2007 4:55 PM PST   0 recs

I vote for fired
Even though I agree that he did a great job as QB coach and, as a result, was hopeful he'd do better this year as OC, it's almost always a bad idea to try to retain an underperforming employee after he's been demoted.  Bad morale, wounded pride, etc., usually conspire against any successful resolution.

by Menelaus on Jan 8, 2007 5:09 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Does that mean we have one less coach?
He really needs some great coaches surrounding him -- preferably some with experience -- someone in the Homer Smith role.

I really would like to see a great OC. And, if Swoboda is really fired, we will need a QB coach. BO deserves the best.

Also, he needs a fire breathing coach to balance his stoic personality. We really missed Eric Bienemy (sp?).

Strong people surround themselves with strong people -- people smarter and better than them.

I think KD was afraid of Ken Norton Jr.s strength and charisma.

If DG is going to let him come back, he should at least surround him with some talent.

PS. Big runback. I can't care about either of these teams.

McCain
for cointoss?

WTF does he have to do w/ CFB?

by Nestor on Jan 8, 2007 5:31 PM PST   0 recs

If KD takes the playcalling himself...
I am for it.  Because then it is entirely on him.  No excuses, no backing out.

I have to say that I was not complaining about the playcalling in the Nut Bowl.  Not like before.  The biggest problem was he didn't have his kids ready mentally in the 2nd half, and he didn't have the right QB in to make the plays.  4 or so mistakes led to 21 pts and the game for Florida St.  The illegal motion on 4th down, then the punt block, then the TD where our DB was on the ground (they never showed a replay to see if it was pass interference on Florida St. and I was too disgusted to find out on my own), the touch out of bounds, and the interception.  Those were all Head Coach mistakes, not OC mistakes.

I just want to see KD put it all out there with no one to hide behind.  This is his team now.  His recruits, his coaches, his playbook.  No excuses.

by isodore on Jan 8, 2007 5:37 PM PST   0 recs

The chickenshit FG call
on 4th down was inexcuseable.

He called plays PC could not execute. Another way of saying the same thing is that he had the wrong QB on the field.

And, we stopped running when we were running right through them.

You are right. He will be backed into a corner. He will have to take responsibility for his own failures. If the offense sputters, it's on him.

Not just that FG call
the two plays before that when we called running plays up the middle w/o taking a single shot in the end zone were just as horrible. It was the Washington game all over again.

by Nestor on Jan 8, 2007 5:46 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

WOW
if Karl Dorrell never gets his dream of being a head coach in the NFL people will point to this decision to be the OC next year as the reason.  He is taking a big risk.  He's either got guts, which he deserves credit for, or he's made a huge miscalculation.  But as has been said, its all on him now, no scapegoats.

And Nestor is right, the plays preceding the 4th down is where he blew it.  He can learn, as he had towards the end of the season by going after teams right after demoralizing plays.  And he has picked up his play calling in some games. But too many bonehead calls produced very little offense in the end.  Not sure if he can improve in the off season enough to win the games he will need to to win an NFL job, or possibly keep his job.  Big mistake.

fwiw
this was being reported on local radio (570 I think).

oh and btw...
I dislike both but I like Florida less so....

Go OSU!

Replacement Coaches Being Hired
All year long, members of Bruins Nation listed "wish list" coaches.

Interesting how many have been hired or whose names are in play.

We have good taste and judgment.

Pac 10 Officiating crew?
You've got to be kidding me...

What have any of these assclowns done to deserve to officiate the national championship game?

by Tydides on Jan 8, 2007 6:00 PM PST   0 recs

lol
I feel for these teams.

by Nestor on Jan 8, 2007 6:02 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Tydides beat me
I was just about to rip these blind idiot refs. Putting Pac 10 officials in the "National Title Game" on replay is the equivalent of have a man with no tongue being food taster for the king.

Ohio State
looks a little out of sync and a little slow ... may be that looooooooooooooooooooong layoff had a negative impact on SweaterVest's troops?

by Nestor on Jan 8, 2007 7:01 PM PST   0 recs

well
this is turning out to be a huge surprise.

and to think UCLA could have gone after Urban Meyer instead of a loser like Dorrell when they fired Toledo. And it could have gotten Meyer for a price (at that time out of BGSU) at the same rate of Dorrell.

by Nestor on Jan 8, 2007 7:13 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

The fact that UCLA could have had
someone like Urban Meyer when we have a coach like Dorrell makes me very sad.  Dan Guerrero needs to seriously check himself and make a thorough decision next time.  We're UCLA and we play in the Rose Bowl, the greatest venue in college football. There is no frickin reason why we can't have a gamer like Meyer.

We stayed in the shallow end.

BTW
how about that play on 3rd and G? rolling out your QB for that short pass to the end zone.

Taking a shot in the endzone. What a revolutionary concept?

by Nestor on Jan 8, 2007 7:16 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Nestor
You've been on this all year.

Maybe you should be the new OC.

by Class of 66 on Jan 8, 2007 7:28 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I don't have a problem with this.
Nestor, can you get your resume put together and faxed?

by Fox 71 on Jan 8, 2007 7:43 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Gotta root for OSU
In Tampa, we're getting the Florida radio feed.  These guys have to be the worst homer announcers in the history of announcing.  Hence, instead of being indifferent, I am rooting for OSU.  (A little late, though, in light of the halftime store.)

by Fox 71 on Jan 8, 2007 7:17 PM PST   0 recs

Who is the loved one of Troy Smith's
who was kidnapped to assure the Florida victory. I mean is this an epic tank job or what? This is a Torretta-esk Post Heisman effort.
I have the sweatervest but that punk U Meyer lifting that trophy makes my vomit into my mouth. And that stupid Gator Chomp holding two titles is worse.

by Ghost of seven in a row on Jan 8, 2007 7:51 PM PST   0 recs

Is it possible to cover the flat?
Is Toledo in charge of the tOSU defense?

Florida owes UCLA
They wouldn't be there if it weren't for us.

by True Blue and Gold on Jan 8, 2007 7:56 PM PST   0 recs

Heh
We also handed them the basketball championship.

by Hornblower on Jan 8, 2007 8:25 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Actually,
at the the Emerald Bowl a group of Florida fans stood up with a sheet-style banner that said "Thank You UCLA, from Florida" and paraded back and forth.  Then Williams touched the ball out of bounds and I lost it all.....

by sausmaf on Jan 8, 2007 8:49 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Yawn
This is about as exciting as ..., well, it's not very exciting.

My illuminating observations:

  •  Troy Smith has re-defined the Heisman jinx.
  •  Got to be the worst performance by a team since the second half of the UCLA-Washington game.
  •  Great job by the SweaterVest guy.  Here's his half-time speech:  "Well, everything we've tried hasn't worked.  Let's do the same thing in the second half, and maybe it will work this time."
Good night all.

by Fox 71 on Jan 8, 2007 8:48 PM PST   0 recs

Alright...
It sucks that Florida won this and now is the first school to hold the first simultaneous national championships in football and basketball (especially when you consider the role we played on their path there). But, how's this for a storyline, with the way Coach Howland has our boys playing, we stand a good chance of returning to the Final Four and hopefully bring home the title this year. It'd be nice if we had another crack at essentially the same Florida team that beat us last year. Then, we should be fielding a good football team next year, so what if... oh wait, Dorrell is calling the plays next year. Forget it.

But seriously, it'd be cool if we could double up next year.

by trojan killing greek guy on Jan 8, 2007 9:34 PM PST   0 recs

That...
Was a full on ass kicking.  Couldn't happen to a nicer head coach.  The Vest is a shady dude.
