The "Show Me" Season: Bye Week Open Thread

Bruins are not in action today. I know lot of you are really concerned about the direction of our football program. But no worries folks.

Despite producing two more humiliating losses in the ongoing Dorrell era, our head coach thinks the team is in "still in a pretty good position in conference"!:

In fact Baghdad Karl is feeling so good about his team that he called off practices yesterday and today (they are having a "meeting" tomorrow and they will not practice as they usually don't on Monday). He is not all that worried about a QB situation which depends on Cowan's return, and the ability of the Law Firm or Forcier (as Baghdad Karl seems determined to freeze out Osaar Rasshan) his unstoppable WCO.

So what can we do? Well keep the discussions going on DumpDorrell.com's billboard idea. Watch the games today. There are some good ones such as USC at UNC, LSU at Kentucky, or even BC at ND.

Keep the chatter going. And post anything we should take note of here in our bye week open thread.

GO BRUINS.

Enjoying My Saturday Football
What a great day. Watching football played with creativity, art and passion.

The best part -- none of the constant anxiety and stomach pains that accompany waiting for and watching CTS's UCLA team.

This bye week is great.

It's allowing us to heal.

No, not the players, the fans. We needed this week off.

Here Here
closest thing to winning at this point. sad but true.  GREAT POSTER!!!!  Blow it up and Sell It!!
GO BRUIN BLUE.

You're right again, sjh
It's nice watching real football.

It's also nice to have one's thoughts vindicated.  The WCO Nebraska style managed to send Nebraska people home by halftime, trailing a mere 38-0.  But it's close to being unstoppable.  They did manage 14 points in the second half.

GO WILDCATS
suc looking suc-ky, tied 10-10 at the half

Great news
This way, even if we do beat USC KD can still go!

Arizona isn't playing that well either
And the USC fans boo the players off the field at halftime again.

13-10 Catz now
midway through the 3rd Qtr.

So much for the suc'sters coming back with a vengance.

Notre Dame Playing Like Notre Dame
Down 13-0 at half.

Looking shitty. Just like they looked against us.

But, we found a way to lose.

The stars are lining up against KD.

sc not looking great -- so beating them will not be a "career saver".

ND looking bad -- emphasizing how truly horrible we were last week.

Kentucky playing well against LSU. Brooks looking good.

Anyone watching Leach's Texas Tech? They are beating an A&M team that reminds me of us. Talented but poorly coached. Coach Fran, even though he is 5-1, may be gone at the end of this season because of a scandal over his subsrciption based "insider newsletter". In many ways he reminds me of CTS. Wins just enough to hang on. Gives the appearance of integrity, but the veneer is cracking.

Ah, football Saturdays.

Wow
Arizona just had an 85 yard punt, downed at the one yard line.

Great punt...
...but Arizona is in trouble. It looks like SC will pull off a nailbiter.

Absolutely awful 2 min offense
Tuitama completed 3/4 passes for a total of 4 yards.  Only one pass was thrown pass was thrown past the first down line, and only one pass was completed beyond the line of scrimmage.  On 4th and 9 they completed a three yard pass.  Absolutely terrible.

by SuperBruinMan on Oct 13, 2007 4:00 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Looked pretty...
..dare I say, Dorrellian to me?

It's a measure of how far SUC has fallen that they're touting a 6 point win over ARIZONA AT HOME as some kind of grand victory. If ARIZONA can stay within 6 of them at their place, I fully expect us to do the same. Their offense looked just as horrible as ours in the second half. Where we Run Run Pass, they Slant, Run, Slant. Predictable. Boring. Dorrellian. And still good enough to put the fear of Stanford into the SUCsters.

by Tydides on Oct 13, 2007 4:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Stoops is on the hot seat
And rightfully so, even after this game. The end of the game was uninspiring for Zona.

After the Stanford and Zona games, I am fully convinced that even we have a good chance to beat SUC, even with KD coaching, and even at the Coliseum.

justsc has looked mortal
for the past several weeks.  But Yoyo, I have only three words to say - "Utah," "Notre" and "Dame."

LSU is using their passing quarterback, but he is horrible.  I'm not conceding that LSU is going to the championship game.  They look really crummy on offense.

by Fox 71 on Oct 13, 2007 4:12 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

LSU on the edge
Kentucky has taken them onto triple-overtime, needing a TD + made 2pt to win, TD for 4ot.

by bruinhoo on Oct 13, 2007 5:00 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Absolutely agree with you
My comment was more about SC being mortal than KD being any good.

You may dare
Last minute offenses fail all the time, but it is completely unacceptable for the QB to throw it three yards on 4th and 9.

Baghdad Karl on NBC4 in LA
Caught a glimpse of a preview for his Sunday night interview.  Looks like he is in full spin mode in again.  Not sure who asked the questions and where it took place, but I will be interested to see how probing the questions are.

LSU loses to UK
43-37 in 3ot. Cal now set to become #1 with a win over the Beavers.

Um, woohoo for next week?

by bruinhoo on Oct 13, 2007 5:05 PM PDT   0 recs

Again- bad playcalling
Kentucky gets a TD and LSU responds with 4 consecutive runs up the middle.  Stupid.

by SuperBruinMan on Oct 13, 2007 5:08 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm not sure it was all that stupid
LSU's QB was really off the mark.  I think they had a better chance to get a first with four runs than with four passes.

It will be interesting to hearwhat the quotes are coming out of the LSU coaches.  I'm sure Miles will blame his players, his assistants, etc.

by Fox 71 on Oct 13, 2007 5:28 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

They shouldn't have passed 4 times
But I think they would have had a better chance if they had passed twice on 3rd and 4 instead of running twice.

by SuperBruinMan on Oct 13, 2007 5:57 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

BTW
You should see this.

by SuperBruinMan on Oct 13, 2007 6:16 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah - I've seen this clip before
This guy can really sing.  There are lots of people who can sing and who pretend a lot. But this guy can really hit it.  You've seen the baseball purists who insist that they love the 1-0 games, but you know deep down they want to see the home runs.  Opera people can talk all they want, but what they really show up for is the tenor hitting the high C.

I was just in Il Trovatore.  Our Manrico, a guy named Gustavo Lopez Manzitti, didn't like my home run analogy.  He was from Argentina, and used the bull fighting analogy.  He said, "People come to see blood" (or as he pronounced it, "blod.")

There is really nothing nicer than a real tenor who can hit the big notes.  Unless maybe it's a football coach who is actually a coach and who can actually speak, etc, etc.  (Sigh.)

by Fox 71 on Oct 13, 2007 6:37 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

SPTR
sc got an incredible break when the SPTR's called a face mask penalty that replays showed was not there.

Instead of a 4th down punting situation, they got a first down and finished the drive with a score.

I'm not complaining that sc was given favorable treatment, I don't think that's true.

But, I'm so tired of bad sptr calls changing games.

by Class of 66 on Oct 13, 2007 5:34 PM PDT   0 recs

I don't think they scored on that drive
But it did help their field position, and they scored on the next drive.

Longshore out tonight for Cal
not fully recovered from a sprained ankle suffered during the Oregon game. Shockingly, Tedford has gone with his athletic, mobile young QB for tonight's game.

by bruinhoo on Oct 13, 2007 5:41 PM PDT   0 recs

Bad Versus Coverage Makes Replay Meaningless
We've seen this in several games this season.

They don't use enough cameras to get all of the angles that the other networks use.

So, in the Cal/OSU game, we will really never know whether Bernard scored or not.

Great game. I love seeing coaches go for touchdowns in the Red Zone.

sjh

by Class of 66 on Oct 13, 2007 7:01 PM PDT   0 recs

Versus
The coverage is not only not good, it looks like they're using cameras that were retired years ago by KTLA.

Cal just gave up the TD and now the turnover on the kickoff, and now the personal foul.  I didn't watch UCLA against OSU.  But has the OSU guy changed uniforms?  Isn't this exactly what OSU did to, I mean, for us?

by Fox 71 on Oct 13, 2007 7:06 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Absolutely
Their QB and special teams gave us the game.

Now, Cal is doing them the same favor.

I Hate it When ....
we are in some shitty teams highlight real.

Here I am enjoying my week away from KD and Versus runs an ad for the TCU/Utah game showing Utah beating up on us.

sjh

PS. Does anyone believe we woud lhave beat OSU if Canfield had played half as well against us as he is playing against Cal?

If OSU beats Cal, and Wash somehow beats ASU, we will be alone in 1st place in the Pac 10. Unbelievable.

Two big plays by Cal
First a 19 yard pass on 4th and 17, then a 37 yard pass to get within field goal range.

by SuperBruinMan on Oct 13, 2007 7:39 PM PDT   0 recs

But Oregon St wins
According to Yahoo.  What happened?

by SuperBruinMan on Oct 13, 2007 7:40 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

there's the downside to the whole frosh QB thing
Cal's guy just utterly, completely f*cked up this game. WOW!

by bruinhoo on Oct 13, 2007 7:40 PM PDT   0 recs

Here's what he did:
Cal had the ball around the OSU 14, with 14 seconds on the clock.

Cal decided to try to win the game by running a pass play before bringing in the kicker -- a field goal would take the game to overtime.

The Cal QB didn't have an open receiver and, instead of throwing the ball away to stop the clock, he ran for the end zone. He was tackled and the game ended before Cal could get the kicker on the field.

academic standards for their athletes??  ha!!  Crazy ... Karl Dorrell's team could be in sole possession of first place in the conference at the end of the day.  Which means, we will REALLY get crushed these next many games.  But not before the Dorrell cultists come out of their closets again.

Riley panicked
he didn't find a receiver and thought he had daylight so he ran for it.  he was stopped short of the first down by about 4 yards with 4 seconds left on the clock.  the FG team tried as hard as possible to run on the field but the clock ran out.

he should have thrown it out of bounds.

We Lost a Rose Bowl that Way
Against Wisconsin.

IIRC, it was Cade Mcnown who did the exact same thing.

1994 Rose Bowl
It was Wayne Cook who did that. But he was a lot further out and UCLA needed a TD anyway.

McNown's Rose Bowl loss was because UCLA couldn't tackle Ron Dayne.

So the question is
where will USF get placed.  They should be one or two.  Being from California, I am used to having teams I like get screwed by the east coast bias, but then I think, Hey, I'm on the east coast and so is USF.

USF is the real deal.  They should be #2, with tOSU being #1.  But that's only because USF is an upstart and tOSU has a tradition.  If tOSU played USF next weekend at RayJay, I would make USF the favorite.

It will sure be interesting to see how the voting goes.

by Fox 71 on Oct 13, 2007 8:22 PM PDT   0 recs

what about BC?
they were ranked above USF in the poll.

by freesia39 on Oct 13, 2007 8:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

USF should be #1 or #2
BC has had a diet of cupcakes.  BC has beaten Wake Forest (4-2), NC State (1-5), GA Tech (4-3), Army (3-4), Mass (5-1) and Bowling Green (3-3.)  That isn't saying a whole lot.  USF has beaten West Virginia (at the time No. 5) and Auburn (at the time No 17) at Auburn.

I don't think BC belongs in the top 5 with that crappy schedule.

by Fox 71 on Oct 13, 2007 9:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, but you KNOW
they'll be right there, behind Ohio State whose schedule reminds one of ,well, nearly the entire "Hostess" product line

Youngstown State, Kent State, Minnesota, Northwestern, the Huskies, and Akron.  Am I the only one who thought "Akron?  Akron? Why didn't they schedule Fed-Mart, too?"
The Mad Bruin

by lostnacfgop on Oct 14, 2007 5:59 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

USF #2 in the AP
With 11 first-place votes. Of course, the Hostess sponsored Ohio St Buckeyes have taken over the #1 spot.

In the aftemath of last night's losses, LSU stays in the top-5, while  QB-less Cal is dropped down to #10. southern cal's lackluster win over UA dropped it 3 spots in the poll, to #13.

by bruinhoo on Oct 14, 2007 11:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Thanks CTS
If we were truly having a special year as was expected from the start, we could be looking at National Championship aspirations and not just winning the Pac 10 or getting to the BCS, just by attrition. In reality, we're mired in yet another cycle of mediocrity, completely absent from the national picture despite being first place in a BCS conference. If that doesn't spell incompetence, I don't know what does.

44-20. And with that, ASU takes sole possession of first place in the Pac-10, 1/2 game ahead of UCLA.

by bruinhoo on Oct 13, 2007 11:20 PM PDT   0 recs

Hey, KD
We beat OSU, OSU beat Cal.

You claimed you answered the bell and that was why we beat UW.  (Not that it was a team win, but because you answered the freakin' bell.)

Why don't you answer the bell next week, and guarantee us a win over Cal.

Cheatey Petey Pom Pom (wasn't that a Disney Movie)
. . . is channelling his inner "thinker" post victory over the Arizona Jugger-not:

"It was a blast," Carroll said. "This stadium was awesome. The Coliseum was so cool at the end."

"I don't worry about other people's expectations," Carroll said, "and I'm not going to go into depression about all the what-ifs. This was a hard game, so we're going to enjoy it."

"blast?"  "Awesome?"  "cool?"  Gee, how far are we from "kegger at my pad, dudes?  Comical.  These clowns haven't played any of the "upper tier" conference teams yet, either.

Another Weird Day Yesterday

Jeez, BOTH LSU AND Cal going down yesterday; was lucky enough to catch both.  I have no idea what that frosh QB for Cal was thinking when he decided to take off on that last play; must have seen just a tad bit of daylight and thought, "I can make it!!!"  Uh, no.  Must be some terrible hangovers up in Berkeley this A.M.

A.B.C. also showed bonus coverage here in the midwest of USC hanging on to beat 'Zona after the Penn St.-Wisky game was over.  My God, how the mighty have come crashing down to earth.  SC, even though they did eek out to get the "W" simply is not the team they were a year or two ago and even Lou Holtz thinks it's not something that can be rectified in a week or two.

Just looking ahead to next week I'm guessing we'll be facing a verrrrry pissed off Cal team in the Rose Bowl which could prove to be the final nail in the proverbial coffin for KD.  It really makes me mad when I see teams like Ohio State and USF reaping windfall benefits from this wacky season.  UCLA SHOULD be a top 10 program AT LEAST and hopefully, preferably a top 5 team and in the mix for the B.C.S. Championship game.  Why does it have to be like this?
